Alice Guy Blach was the first female film director. She first became involved in cinema while
working for the Gaumont Film company in the late 1890s. This was a period of great change in the

UFOs do they exist?
UFO is short for unidentified flying object. UFOs are popularly known as flying

seen in 1947 by an American pilot, but experts who studied the case said that it had been a trick of the

In 1978 a pilot reported a collection of UFOs off the coast of New Zealand. A television

A few years ago nobody believed that a childrens story about a wizard would sell more than 110
million copies in 200 countries. Harry Potter is the biggest childrens publishing success story ever. Only the
Bible has been translated into more languages than Harry Potter
Joanne Kathleen Rowling didnt think that her books would be successful. She thought that nobody
would publish her writing. But she was not right. Millions of children and adults have enjoyed the magical
tales of Harry Potter and his adventures at Hogwarts School.
Many children know the adventures of Harry Potter but they dont know how Harry Potter was
created. In 1990 Joanne was travelling from Manchester to London when she had the idea to write a book.
She was sitting on the train when she imagined Hogwarts. The journey was much longer than usually so by
the time she got off at Kings Cross station, many parts of the story had been in her head.
However, Rowling started to write the book only in 1993. At that time she lived with her baby
daughter and had little money to live on. Harry Potter did not start as a success story. Nine publishers said no
when Rowling took them her work. Finally, Bloomsbery Press said yes and published Harry Potter.
Since then Pottermania has gone around the world. In the US almost two-thirds of children have read
at least one of the Harry books. J.R. Rowling has earned about 8 million and she has a 4,5 million luxury
home in Kensington. A magazine called Forbes says that she earned 25 million in 1999 alone. Pottermania
is not only about the books. There are official Harry Potter toys, clothes, pens, and posters, which the writer,
Rowling, did not really want first.
