1.

Distinguish between the terms

a. Uniaxial Prestressing
When the prestressing tendons are parallel to one axis, it is called Uniaxial
Prestressing. For example, longitudinal prestressing of beams.
b. Biaxial Prestressing
When there are prestressing tendons parallel to two axes, it is called Biaxial
Prestressing.
c. Triaxial Prestressing
When the prestressing tendons are parallel to more than two axes, it is called
Multiaxial Prestressing. For example, prestressing of domes.

2. Bring out the difference between concentric and eccentric prestressing

The concentric or axial prestressing members in which the entire cross section of
concrete has a uniform compressive prestress. In this type the centroid of the tendon
coincides with that of the concrete section. Where as in eccentric prestressing is a
section at which the tendons are eccentric to the centroid, resulting in a triangular or
trapezoidal compressive stress distribution.

3. Difference between prestressing and partial prestressing

Prestressing is the imposition of internal stresses into a structure in opposite action of

stresses caused by service or working loads. So, in concrete structures, prestressing
provides a pre-compressive axial force to eliminate or greatly reduce internal tensile
stresses along service time of structure. On the other hand, partial prestressing allows
some tension and cracking under full service load while ensuring sufficient ultimate
strength. Therefore, it is used to control camber and deflection, increase ductility and
save costs.

4. What is non-distortional prestressing?

Concrete members deflect due to their own self weight. If prestressing force is applied in
such a way that these deflections are eliminated due to the action of the prestressing
force, it is called as non-distortional prestressing. In such a case, prestressing moments
and self-weight moments balance each other and the concrete member is subjected to an
axial force and bending moments due to externally applied loads only.
5. What is debonding?

It is the process of preventing the bond formation between the tendons and concrete so
that tendons remain in an unbonded condition.
