1.

GENERAL

1.1. The following specifications apply to all materials, equipment and labour necessary for the supply and
installation of steel cladding.

1.2. Work Included

1.2.1. Design of the wall and/or roof cladding system.

1.2.2. Prefinished steel cladding sheets, cell closures, end channels, isolating tapes, sealants, corners and trim.

1.2.3. Connection hardware for attachment of cladding components to the building structure.

1.2.4. Gutters, downspouts, coping trims, cant and parapet flashing as shown on drawings.

1.2.5. Sealants between cladding components and between cladding and adjoining construction; sealants
around penetrations in the cladding, including ducts and pipes.

1.2.6. Cutting for penetrations.

1.2.7. Steel flashings within the cladding and at penetrations, including piping, ducts and the like.

1.2.8. Drilling and tapping of structure as required for fastening of all work included in this section.

1.2.9. Removal of grime and dirt from the panels as the material is erected.

1.3. Quality Assurance

1.3.1. The contractor engaged in the installation of the cladding shall be skilled and experienced in this type of
work.

1.3.2. Warranties and guarantees to be as described in the Project Contract Documentation.

1.4.1. Canadian Sheet Steel Building Institute (CSSBI) Standards.

1.4.2. CSA S16.1-94 “Limit States Design of Steel Structures”.

1.4.3. ASTM A653/A653M-94 “Specifications for Sheet Steel, Zinc Coated (Galvanized) or Zinc-Alloy Coated
(Galvanealed) by Hot-Dip Process”.

1.4.4. The latest edition of the Provincial Building Code for the Province in which the Project is built.

1.5. Submittals

1.5.1. Shop drawings of the cladding, lay-out and construction details shall be submitted to the Owner or his
Assigned Representative for review before commencing fabrication. Show details, and their location, of
cladding, joints, fastenings and fastener layout, penetrations, flashings, closures, and sealants. Indicate
base metal thicknesses of all materials. Shop drawings for cladding shall be coordinated with those of
other trades to ensure correct interface details required to provide a watertight and weatherproof
installation.

1.5.2. Shop drawings shall bear the stamp of a registered Professional Engineer registered in or licenced to
practice in the Province where the project is built.

1.5.3. Duplicate colour samples of the steel cladding shall be submitted to the Owner or his Assigned
Representative for final colour acceptance. Colour samples shall be at least 100 mm (4”) square each.

1.6. Delivery, Handling and Storage

1.6.1. Materials shall be delivered, handled and stored by methods approved by the manufacturer.
Components shall be stored at the work site on wood platforms raised above grade tilted sufficiently to
ensure no water remains on the material or stored in enclosures protected from the elements and
corrosive materials.

1.6.2. Care shall be exercised in handling and placing the cladding panels to prevent damage likely to impair
the adequacy or appearance of the material in the finished structure.

1.7. Design Criteria

1.7.1. Cladding panels shall be designed to provide a complete weatherproof covering of the applicable interior
spaces.

1.7.2. Structural design criteria shall conform to the applicable Provincial Building Code and the Project Design
Criteria.

1.7.3. Deflections.

1.7.3.1. Wall cladding not to exceed 1/90 of the span for live loading.

1.7.3.2. Roof cladding not to exceed 1/180 of the span for live loading.

1.7.4. Roof cladding.

1.7.4.1. Where possible, roof cladding shall be continuous over 4 or more structural supports.

1.7.4.2. Slopes for roof cladding using a single length sheet shall not be less than one (1) in six (6).

1.7.4.3. Slopes for roof cladding using sheets with overlapping ends shall not be less than one (1) in three (3).

1.7.5. The cladding fasteners and connections shall withstand positive and negative pressures resulting from
local wind loading as defined in the applicable Building Code and Project Design Criteria.

1.7.6. Wind pressure shall be assumed for a probability factor of being exceeded once in 30 years. For
additional modification factors see the applicable Building Code and the Project Design Criteria.

1.7.7. The cladding system must be designed to accommodate movement in the system and between the
system and building structure without creating permanent distortion, undue stress on fasteners, damage
to infills, racking of joints, breakage of seals or water penetration.

1.7.8. The cladding fabricator shall design the cladding system to accommodate erection tolerances in
accordance with CSA S16.1-94.

2. PRODUCTS

2.1. Materials

2.1.1. All materials shall be new.

2.1.2. All cladding shall be to ASTM A653/A653M-94.

2.1.3. Profile shall be ribbed 38 mm (1 1/2")deep, 152 mm (6”) pitch and 0.76 mm (0.030”) core thickness, or
as indicated on drawings.

2.1.4. Cladding shall be prefinished on both sides with 8 mils of PVC Plastisol similar to Stelco’s “Barrier Series”
or as indicated on drawings.

2.1.4.1. The exterior colour shall be as indicated on drawings. The interior colour shall be Stelco’s QC-1546
“Interior White” or as indicated on drawings.

2.1.5. Flashing and trims shall be fabricated from the same material and have the same thickness and finish as
the cladding sheets.

2.1.6. Fasteners and hidden clips shall be supplied in accordance with manufacturer' s recommendation to
meet the load requirements specified and maintain a weather-tight installation.

2.1.6.1. Structural fasteners shall be cadmium-plated series 300 stainless steel, #14, type B self-tapping screw
with stainless steel bonded EPDM "Neo Bond" washer.

2.1.6.2. Side lap and flashing fasteners shall be series 300 stainless steel, #14, type AB screws with stainless
steel bonded EPDM "Neo Bond" washer.

2.1.6.3. Fastener head and washers shall be painted to match the cladding colour.

2.1.7. Closures shall be according to the cladding manufacturer'

2.1.8. Sealing tape for cladding laps and flashing shall be non-absorptive, self adhesive, cross linked butyl tape
of suitable thickness and width equal to “Tremco 440 II”.

2.1.9. Gun applied sealant shall be non-staining, medium modulus, one part silicone sealant equal to Dow
Corning “795 Silicone Building Sealant”.

2.1.10. Isolating tape or strips shall be used to prevent contact between dissimilar materials. Use tape of non-
absorptive self adhesive material, or strips of high density closed cell polyethylene, or an approved
equivalent. The material used must completely fill the interface between the dissimilar materials to
prevent any moisture leakage or retention.

3. EXECUTION

3.1. Examination

3.1.1. Before commencing the work, the contractor shall examine and verify that:

3.1.1.1. The structural alignment and covering dimensions are adequate for his work.

3.1.1.2. Other previously executed work affecting this section is adequate for his work.

3.1.2. Any discovered discrepancies shall be reported to the Owner or his Assigned Representative so that
instructions may be given for the necessary remedial work.

3.2. Erection

3.2.1. Erection work shall be carried out by contractors having experience and acquired skills in this work, in
accordance with the specifications, shop drawings and manufacturer’s instructions.

3.2.2. Wall Cladding

3.2.2.1. Sheets shall be installed with corrugations vertical starting at either end of the wall and proceeding in
horizontal courses beginning with the lower course.

3.2.2.2. End and side laps shall be as per manufacturer'


s specifications for the intended design conditions. All
end laps to terminate over a girt.

3.2.2.3. Spacing of fasteners shall be as per manufacturer's specifications for the intended design conditions. At
a minimum, cladding fastening shall be at every valley at sheet termination girts and every second valley
at intermediate girts.

3.2.3. Roof Cladding

3.2.3.1. Sheets shall be installed with corrugations starting at either end of the roof edge and proceeding in
horizontal courses beginning with the lower course at the eave edge.

3.2.3.2. End and side laps shall be as per manufacturer’s instructions for the intended design conditions. All end
laps to terminate over a purlin.

3.2.3.3. Spacing of fasteners shall be as per manufacturer’s specifications for the intended design conditions.

3.2.4. Maximum fastener spacing shall not exceed 450 mm (18”) for side lap fasteners and 300 mm (12”) for
flashing fasteners, except at corners where it shall be 200 mm (8”).

3.2.5. Fasteners shall be installed in true horizontal and vertical lines only; there shall be no staggered screw
patterns.

3.2.6. Openings shall be provided for pipes, mechanical and electrical ducts and as indicated on the drawings.
When field cutting is undertaken, care shall be exercised to ensure that cuttings do not remain on
exposed siding surfaces.

3.2.7. Flashing, reinforcing and sealant shall be provided for all cladding openings.

3.2.8. Closure strips, flashing and sealants, shall be installed as required to make the assembly waterproof.

3.2.9. Minor abrasions at fasteners and lap joints shall be touched-up with matching paint.

3.2.10. Stained, damaged or defective material installed, shall be removed and replaced with undamaged
material, without cost to the Owner.

3.2.11. Isolating tape or strips shall be applied on each contact surface between dissimilar metals or materials.

3.3. Sealant Application

3.3.1. Application shall be done in accordance with joint preparation and sealant installation procedures of the
sealant manufacturer.

3.4. Clean-Up

3.4.1. Any marks on cladding panels shall be removed. Defects to the work of this section or to any other work
caused by the work of this section shall be repaired. The cladding shall be left clean and free of all grime
and dirt and excess sealant. Clippings and cuttings shall be cleaned off to prevent rust staining.

3.4.2. At the completion of the work of this section, any excess material, debris and equipment associated with
the work of this section shall be removed from the work site.
