TUTORIAL 1. STACK DESIGN AND CALCULATIONS
1.1. Calculate the dimensions of a stack through which 82,700 kg/h of combustion gases are passing,
and which works with a puff at the combustion chamber of 3.6 cm H2O, and has a puff along the stack
height of 0.83 cm H2O. The temperature of the air is 27°C, the temperature of the gases at the bottom
of the stack is 343°C, and the average temperature of the gases along the stack is 280°C.
The density of the fluid which measures the puff is 996.3 kg/m3; the atmospheric pressure is
750 mm Hg, and the velocity coefficient is 0.4.
Note: the total puff is the theoretical puff.
Solution: Hg = 83.16 m; D = 1.87 m
1.2. At the combustion room 1,362 kg of coal are being spent per hour, and the weight ratio gases/coal
is 15/1. The probable puff drop at the combustible fuel bed is equal to 0.38 cm H2O; at the combustion
boiler is equal to 0.76 cm H2O; at one of the split pipes is 0.3 cm H2O; and in curved pipes and other
paths is 0.14 cm H2O.The expected temperatures are: 26.7°C for the outside air temperature; 287.8°C
for the gases at the point they enter into the stack, and 204°C for the average temperature of the
gases in the stack. The calculated puff can be assumed to be 0.8 of the theoretical puff, and the velocity
coefficient of the gases is equal to 0.35.
Calculate the height and the diameter of the required stack, knowing that the atmospheric pressure
is 748 mm Hg and the density of the fluid which indicates the puff is 996.1 kg/m3.
Solution: Hg = 45.69 m; D = 1.19 m
1.3. A chimney of 56.39 m of height is able to work during both, the winter and the summer, under
the following conditions: average temperature of the combusted gases: 260°C; temperature of the
fluid which indicates the puff (H2O), 37.8°C, and barometric pressure of 744.2 mmHg. The temperature
of the exterior (or outside air temperature) can be equal to ‐34.4°C in winter and 37.8°C in summer.
What is the difference between the possible theoretical puff obtained in winter respect to the
obtained in summer?
Note that the density of water at 310.8K is 994.3 Kg/m3.
Solution: hwinter = 441.75 Pa ; hsummer = 255.96 Pa ; hwinter‐hsummer = 185.79 Pa = 1.9 cm H2O

1.4. According to the regulation, a 47 meters high stack has been built. The velocity that the gases
should have in order to let the stack work properly is 20 m/s. The temperature of the air is 30°C, the
average temperature of the gases is 240°C, the pressure is 755 mm Hg, and the density if the indicating
fluid is 994.5 kg/m3. Indicate whether it would be necessary to modulate or force the puff, and if so
how, as to get the proper working conditions on the plant.
Solution: Theoretical puff should be increased by 6.52 cm H2O to achieve 20 m/s of gas velocity.
1.5. A real puff of 20 mm H2O is required to evacuate the fumes from the combustion. A flow rate of
5,380 kg/h arrives to the bottom of the steel stack at 320°C. Calculate the stack height knowing that
ambient conditions are: Ta = 20°C and Pa = 760 mm Hg.
Solution: Hg = 43.98 m
