Foreword
This Standard specifies the representation on drawings of decorative surface textures such as wood
and leather grain, ripples or profiling. It only applies to surface textures created for stylistic reasons.
DIN EN ISO 8785 shall apply with regard to the qualitative description of surface textures created
for technical reasons.
• a collection of surface texture samples which is available for inspection in the Design/Interior
Trim Department or at a location designated by that department.
This edition supersedes the previous edition of this standard dated 2009-10.
Changes
In comparison with edition 2009-10, the following changes have been made:
Overall document • Converted to the current MBN template. As a result, the standard
was revised and restructured.
Annex deleted • Informative annex "List of decor numbers" removed
(provided as supplementary specification).
Foreword • Foreword revised.
Section 6 • Additional documentation examples of the standard
title box added.

1 Scope
This Standard specifies the representation on drawings of decorative surface textures such as wood
and leather grain, ripples or profiling. This Standard does not describe the quality of surface textures
created for technical reasons.
The surface textures covered by this Standard are located in the visible area of parts made of plastics,
elastomers, natural products (e.g. leather, wood), paper products, laminated textiles, on extruded
parts or on covers manufactured from the above-mentioned materials on parts. The relevant surface
texture can only be achieved on a suitable material or substrate using the specific forming method.
2 Normative references
The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document.
For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition
of the referenced document (including any changes) applies.
Decor number A non-classifying designation with a 6-digit number to identify a surface texture
corresponding to a surface texture sample.
Wood-type grain Natural, reproduced or imitated surface texture as found in layered materials
such as wood, sedimentary rock, etc.
Leather-type grain Surface characterized by the irregular arrangement of surface characteristics,
e.g. leather-like, sand-cast-type.
Surface In analogy with DIN EN ISO 8785: grooves, dimples, pinholes, pores, raised
characteristics areas, granules, waves, furrows, scales, stepped plates and chisel marks
(for graphic representation, refer to DIN EN ISO 8785).
Surface texture In accordance with DIN EN ISO 8785: repetitive or random deviations from
the geometrical surface in the three-dimensional topography of the surface.
Profiling A surface texture created by the regular arrangement of surface characteristics.
Ripples A surface texture created by the regular arrangement of grooves.
4 General requirements
For safety requirements, homologation (in particular, exhaust emissions), and quality, the existing
statutory requirements and laws shall be complied with. In addition, the relevant requirements
of the Daimler Group apply.
All materials, procedures, processes, components, and systems shall conform to the current
statutory requirements regarding regulated substances and recyclability.
6 Indications on drawings
On drawings and in CAD models, the relevant surface shall be identified in accordance
with VDA 2005 by the basic symbol with circle (see Figure 1).
Decor
The associated decor number shall be entered in the standard title box in the field
"Decoration MBN 31030" in accordance with MBN 31020-1 (see Figure 2).

If a part features different decors, the corresponding surfaces shall be indicated with
the corresponding surface specifications. The corresponding surface shall be identified
as Decor A, Decor B, Decor C, etc. (see example in Figure 3).

Enter only the reference symbol * in the field "Decoration .. MBN 31030", which is explained
near the standard title box (see example in Figure 4).

Alternatively, it is also possible to state the decor number after the "Decor" text and enter
the MBN number directly above the surface symbol (see Figure 5). Note: Used in 3D master process.
If more than one decor is used, the title box shall feature a reference symbol (e.g. "*").
If only part of a surface is to be provided with a surface texture, the relevant area shall be marked
using long dashed dotted line no. 04 in accordance with DIN EN ISO 128-20
(see example in Figure 6).
