Past and present

How does tense affect meaning?

(¿Cómo afecta al significado el tempo verbal?)

English verbs have two components: Time, and Aspect. Time refers to Past, Present, and Future; and Aspect,
to their Simple, Continuous, or Perfect forms.

In this example:

“I am reading at the moment”.

We know the Time is Present and the Aspect is Continuous or Progressive, which means that it is an action
that is going on now, and that it is not finished, it continues. Also, the expression “at the moment”, tells us is
it happening now (it is a Signalexpression).

On the other hand, in the sentence:

“I usually read a lot”.

The meaning is different – it is Present, it is the same person and verb (I / to read), but the verb is Simple;
this means that the action is habitual. Also, the signal word “usually”, tells us it is a frequent action.

Recognizing aspect, time, and signal words is fundamental for better understanding oral or written
messages; by practicing, we also communicate more efficiently.

In the present unit, you will find:

Reading material (theory) – read it carefully and if you have any question, write us in "Foro de
Consulta".

A list with Irregular verbs in the Past and Past Participle. They are for your reference.
Tenses Chart - A graphic explanation of the theory; it also includes an additional link to practice
Past Simple / Past Continuous, Present Simple / Present Continuous. They are optional
activities, but they are very useful for revision. When you finish, you will find:

Grammar Exercise 1 – There is a text with empty spaces for verbs; you have to select the
correct option. You will find this activity in the section "Evaluaciones" in the menu.

 Additional material: Irregular verbs list (Material de referencia: listado de verbos irregulares)

The choice of one tense over another implies a different

meaning; for example, Continuous or Progressive aspects (I am
doing) “say” that the action is in progress.

Future and perfect tenses

Are you working now?

In everyday communication, we use many different tenses in the same paragraph – even in the same
sentence.

The focus in this unit is to differentiate tenses that are easily confused: Past Simple / Past Continuous;
Present Perfect Simple / Present Perfect Continuous; Future with “Will” and Future with “Going to”.

This tutorial is about the present perfect and the present perfect
continuous. This tutorial shows you how to form and when to use a
present perfect and how to form and when to use a present perfect
continuous.

Although these pairs are in the same time, they have slightly different meanings.

“I will travel”.
We know the Time is Future, it means that it is probable that I will take a trip, or that I am deciding at this very
moment, that I want to take a trip.

On the other hand, in the sentence:

“I am going to travel”.

The meaning is different – it is Future, it is the same person and verb (I / to travel), but the use of” Going to”
implies that it is certain – I may have a ticket or have made a reservation at the hotel.

Christina in Austria says: would you be able to explain the difference between "will" and "going to" when
talking about the future please? I've heard a few explanations in the past but I'm still unsure about what to
use a lot of the time.

Recognizing these differences is very important to communicate more efficiently.

In the present unit, you will find:

Reading material (theory) containing more detail on some tenses. If you have any question,
write us in "Foro de Consulta".

A chart with signal words for each tense for your reference, and with time markers.

Video explanation– watch and listen to an explanation on thePresent Perfect and Present
Perfect Continuous. TIP: you can activate the subtitles in English.

Module 2 Activity– You will read an article about Richard Branson on how and why they are
studying at the university. Then, you will post your own story, using all Tenses.

Grammar Exercise 2 – Read the sentences and select the correct option from the list of verbs.
You will find this activity in the section "Evaluaciones" in the menu.

“I have been working really hard lately.”

(He estado trabajando muy duro estos últimamente)

The Present Perfect Continuous speaks about an action that
started in the past, and has recently stopped, so its effect is still
present.
