Lesson Plan in Mathematics
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
1. Understand the concepts of polynomials.
2. Recognize and give examples of a polynomial.
3. Identify the base, coefficient, term, and exponent of a given polynomial
III. Procedure
A. Motivation
The class will be divided into 4 groups and will be given an envelope
containing letters. They will then create words out of those letters. The
groups will be given five minutes to complete the task. The group who will
have the highest number of correct words formed will win.
B. Presentation
1. The teacher will have brief review on algebraic expression.
2. The teacher will then proceeds with the lesson proper.
Definition of terms
Term is a constant, a variable or a product of constant and variable.
Ex. 3𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 5, the 3𝑥 2 , - 𝑥, and 5 are called terms
In the term 3𝑥 2 , 3 is called the numerical coefficient and 𝑥 2 is
called the literal coefficient where 𝑥 is called the base and 2 is called
the exponent.
Numerical coefficient is the constant/number.
Literal coefficient is the variable including its exponent.
The term –x has a numerical coefficient which is -1 and a literal
coefficient which is x. The term 5 is called the constant, which is
usually referred to as the term without a variable.
Degree is the highest exponent or the highest sum of exponents of the
variables in a term.
Similar Terms are terms having the same literal coefficients.
Ex. 3𝑥 2 and -5𝑥 2
Polynomial is a kind of algebraic expression where each term is a
constant, a variable or a product of a constant and variable in which
the variable has a whole number (non-negative number) exponent. A
polynomial can be a monomial, binomial, trinomial or a multinomial.
An algebraic expression is NOT a polynomial if
1) the exponent of the variable is NOT a whole number {0, 1, 2, 3..}.
2) the variable is inside the radical sign.
3) the variable is in the denominator.
C. Activity
IV. Evaluation
V. Assignment
Study in advance the addition and subtraction of polynomial and answer the
following problem.
1) -5x+2x
2) 10𝑦 4 +6𝑦 4 -12𝑦 4
3) -8𝑥 2 -10𝑥 2
4) 5x-3x-8x+6x
5) 5xy-xy
