A DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 8

by: Dhevy P. Liban

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a. Illustrates theorems on triangle inequalities: Triangle Inequality Theorem
b. Recognize the importance of triangle inequality theorem in solving real-life
problem.
c. Applies theorems on triangle inequalities.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: Triangle Inequality Theorem
B. References: Teachers Guide pp.381 – 400 , Geogebra
(https://www.geogebra.org/m/zc3fyv5c)
C. Instructional Materials: laptop, straw, ruler, and scissor
D. Values to be develop: Teamwork and Participation
III. PROCEDURE
Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
1. Prayer
Please stand for a short prayer.
(The teacher will assign a student to lead a - Lord thank you for this day. Help
prayer.) us to focus our hearts and minds
now on what we are about to learn.
Inspire us by Your Holy Spirit as
we listen and write. All this we ask
in the name of Jesus. Amen!
Okay you may now take your seat.

* Checking of attendance.
I can see that no one is absent today, so
keep it up.
2. Greetings
Good morning class! I am glad to see you in
this new episode of learning Mathematics 8.
Teacher Dhevy is here to be your facilitator
and best buddy in learning wonderful Math
ideas, concepts and applications.
Please observe the classroom etiquette
throughout the session. If you have
questions or suggestions raise your hand for
you to be recognized.
3. Motivation
Everyone, kindly stand up because we will do the
“STRETCHING” activity. This activity is to
awaken your body.
All you have to do is follow the movement that I
will show.

Are you ready class? - Yes ma’am!

(The teacher will demonstrate the movement with
music accompaniment)
Guide Questions:
Are you awake now?
- Yes ma’am!
What shape did you form when you touch your
shoulder using the tip of your finger? - Triangle ma’am.

How about, if you touch your shoulder using the

end of your palm or the base of your finger? Can - We cannot form a shape ma’am
you touch it? because our palm cannot touch our
shoulder.
What is the reason why you can’t touch your
shoulder using the end of your palm or the base of - It is because the length of our arm
your finger?
is too short ma’am.
4. Presentation
Before we proceed to our discussion, let’s try to
unlock words through 4 pics 1word.
Are you ready? - Yes ma’am!

- TRIANGLE ma’am.

- INEQUALITY ma’am.

- THEOREM ma’am.

Based on the unlocked words, what do you

think will be our topic for today? - It’s all about Triangle Inequality
Theorem ma’am.

Alright! Today you will discover and

understand the Triangle Inequality Theorem.
Please listen attentively because are expected
to:
a. Determine the relationship of the sides
of a triangle;
b. Illustrate triangle Inequality: Triangle
Inequality Theorem; and
c. Recognize the importance of triangle
inequality theorem in solving real-life
problem.
B. ANALYSIS
Let us discover the Triangle Inequality Theorem by
an activity entitled: “Investigating the Possible
Lengths of the Sides of a Triangle.”
The materials that you need for this activity are
pen, straw, ruler, and scissor.

I will divide you into two groups. After you

finish your activity, choose 1 member to
present your output.

Are you ready class? - Yes ma’am!

Here are the procedures:
1. Cut the straws into the following
lengths:
For group 1 (1 in., 2 in., 3 in., and 4 in.)
For group 2 (5 in., 6 in., 7 in., and 8 in.)
2. For each activity below, choose the
three straws indicated in the table. With
the straws touching at the ends, try to
make a triangle.
3. Record the results in the second column.
Complete the last three columns of the
table.
For Group 1

For Group 2

- The activity was fun and

interesting ma’am.

Guide questions: - No ma’am.

How did you find the activity?
- The sum of the lengths of any two
Will you able to make a triangle in all straws is greater than the length of
measurements given? the third straw.

What pattern did you observe with the sets of - The sum of the lengths of any two
straws that form a triangle? straws is equal or less than to the
length of the third straw.
Excellent! How about with the sets of straws
that do not form a triangle?
- “The sum of the lengths of any two
sides of a triangle is greater than
Now, what was your conclusion or how can you the length of the third side.”
state the theorem by describing the relationship
that exists between the lengths of any two sides
and the third side of a triangle?

Great! That was an exact answer. I am glad that - The given lengths of a triangle are
you are learning Math easily. 9 in., 10 in., and 11 in. will satisfy
the Triangle Inequality Theorem
Kindly give a triangle with different lengths to because
test your conclusion. 9 in. + 10 in. > 11 in.
10 in. + 11 in. > 10 in.
9 in. + 11 in. > 9 in.

That’s right!

We can also use software “GEOGEBRA” to

test if given lengths of the sides form a triangle.
Here’s the link to explore the Triangle - Here’s the illustration:
Inequality Theorem.
https://www.geogebra.org/m/zc3fyv5c

Can you prove it using the geogebra app?

Very good! You are really on the right track!

C. ABSTRACTION
Now, anyone in the class will volunteer to sum
up what’s the discussion all about. - The lesson we discussed is all
about Triangle Inequality Theorem.

How are you able to identify the lengths of the - By considering the Triangle
triangle? Inequality Theorem we can
identify the lengths of the sides
will form a triangle or not.
Can you restate the concept of Triangle - The concept of the Triangle
Inequality Theorem? Inequality Theorem is that the sum
of any two sides of a triangle is
greater than the third side.
Why do you think bridges and buildings are build - Because they evenly distribute
using triangles? weight without changing their
proportions.
Very good! In the construction of a building, it is
proven that a triangle is sturdier than a rectangle or
square.
D. APPLICATION
Let’s look beyond the Triangle Inequality
Theorem by performing another task. The title
of the task is “Little Origamist’’ an individual
activity of showing the concept of triangle
inequality theorem.

I have here a box containing a colored paper.

Everyone must pick 1 colored paper and you
are going to fold it according to what you want
for as long as no one in the class will have the
same output.

Here is the criteria of your activity:

- Yes ma’am
Are you ready class?

IV. EVALUATION
Directions: Read the word problem, sketch, and solve it. Show your complete
solution. (Do it on a ½ crosswise sheet of paper)
Jin will make a small triangular frame as a project in Mathematics. Their teacher gave
the length of the two sides of the triangle, 4 inches and 5 inches. What is the shortest
possible length (whole number) of the third side to make a triangular frame?
V. ASSIGNMENT
Given the map below, what are the possible distances from Makati City to Manila?
Justify your answer. (Do it in your notebook)
