QUESTION TWO

(a) Define the following terms

(i) Reflexive relation (2mks)
(ii) Transitive relation (2mks)
(b) Let A = {1, 2, 3},B= {a, b, c}, and C = {x, y, z}. Consider the following relations R and S from A to B
and from B to C, respectively.

R = {(1, b), (2, a), (2, c)} and S = {(a, y), (b, x), (c, y), (c, z)}

(i) Find the composition relation R◦S. (4mks)

(ii) Find the matrices M R , M S and M R ° Sof the respective relations R, S, and R◦S (6mks)

(g) Consider the relation R = {(a, a), (a, b), (b, c), (c, c)} on the set A = {a, b, c}.

Find:

(i) Onto
(ii) One-to-one
(iii) Invertible
(7mks)

(h) Let f :R → R and g: R → R be defined by f (x) = 2x + 1 and g(x) = x2 − 2.

Find the formula for the composition function g◦f (4mks)
(i) Let f:R→R be defined by f(x) = 2x – 3. Now if f is one-to-one and onto, hence f has an inverse
function f −1.

(ii) p → q ≡∼ p ∨ q. (5mks)

(b) Consider the conditional proposition p → q. The simple propositions q → p, ¬p → ¬q and

¬q → ¬p are called, respectively, the converse, inverse, and contrapositive of the conditional p
→ q. Which if any of these propositions are logically equivalent to p → q? (5mks)
