Lesson 1 – Sharing research experiences and knowledge
Introduction

Research has become a mandate of the K-12 curriculum. You, like other Senior High
School students, are expected to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills through
research.
In this lesson, you will find activities that will provide opportunity for you to share
your experiences and prior knowledge on the definition of inquiry and research. In addition,
informative articles and other challenging activities will help you appreciate research as your
great tool in accomplishing your purposes and needs. After this lesson, you are expected to
demonstrate this learning competency:

 YOUR PRE-ASSESSMENT

Directions: Write TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if incorrect. For FALSE
statements, write the correction/s above the wrong word/ phrase in the sentence.

1. Research is an end in itself.

2. Research is not important to man and therefore, unnecessary.

3. Research helps students improve their reading and writing skills.

4. Qualitatve research uses numerical data rather than words to express results of the
investigation.

5. Research must take place in an organized or orderly manner.

6. Inquiry is done by merely asking in order to obtain the desired information.

7. Research and inquiry are synonymous.

8. Research is investigating a process again and again to achieve the desired outcome.

9. To conduct a research activity is to seek for solutions to problems.

10. Research is a tool in improving the quality of life.

Lesson 1.1. Meaning of Inquiry
 YOUR TEXT
Learning is your way of obtaining knowledge about your surroundings. This takes place
in many ways, and one of these is inquiry, which many people in the field of education consider
effective. Inquiry is a learning process that motivates you to obtain knowledge or information
about people, things, places, or events. You do this by investigating or asking questions about
something you are inquisitive about. It requires you to collect data, meaning, facts, and
information about the object of your inquiry, and examine such data carefully. Engaging yourself
in many ways of thinking, you come to conclude that inquiry is an active learning process (Badke
2012).

Lesson 1.2. Meaning of Research

Systematic collection and interpretation of data to illuminate, describe or explain

new facts and relationships (Treece, 2002)
Searching for new knowledge using systematic inquiry, appropriate tools or
instruments and presented with technical format of writing (Guinsiman 2019)
Identifying a problem and finding for possible solutions
Applying science systematically to unlock a phenomena

The meaning of research is explained through analysis of the word “research”. It comes
from the root word, “search” meaning, to look for, find, seek, inquire, investigate and explore.
The application of the word “search” in the world of research is to:

1. Negate and affirm existing ideas, theories, and findings.

2. Improve or revise existing ideas, theories, and findings.
3. Create something new or new model either by putting together ideas, theories or
findings or separating concept, ideas, theories, and findings.
4. Interpret ideas, theories, and findings.

The meaning of the prefix “re’ means again, therefore; research is to investigate a process
again and again until research outputs are improved and acepted by intended users. It is a cycle of
process since change affects the process of research. There is a need to repeat the process in order
to establish reliability and validity of research conducted.

SUMMARY
Central to research is your way of discovering new knowledge, applying knowledge in
various ways as well as seeing relationships of ideas, events, and situations. Research then puts you
in a context where a problem exists. You have to collect facts or information, study such data, and
come up with a solution to the problem based on the results of your analysis. It is a process requiring
you to work logically, systematically, and collaboratively with others.

Summative Assessment
