Irrigation Engineering Group Assignment - 1: Ju, Jit, Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering

This document contains an irrigation engineering group assignment with four questions. The assignment involves: 1) Calculating total maximum available soil water and total present available soil moisture in a field with three soil layers of different depths and properties. 2) Determining moisture content at different depths in a root zone and how much water needs to be applied to bring it to field capacity. 3) Locating the water table and determining water movement directions based on matric potential readings at different depths. 4) Calculating the rate of water supply through a soil sample with three layers and a constant head difference based on the hydraulic conductivity of each layer.

IRRIGATION ENGINEERING GROUP ASSIGNMENT -1 2014

1. A field soil having different distinct layers has the following soil water coefficients:
Soil depth (%) (%) Present state of moisture, ,
(cm) (%)
0 - 20 35 15 25
20 - 40 40 18 27
40 -60 43 20 30
Maize crop is sown in the field. The effective root zone depth of the crop is 50 cm.
Determine the following:
a) Total Maximum available soil water
b) Total present available soil moisture
2. The following data were obtained in determining the soil moisture content at
successive depths in the root zone prior to applying irrigation water:
Depth of sampling Weight of moist soil Weight of oven-dried soil
sample sample
0 – 25 cm 1.35 N 1.27 N
25 – 50 cm 1.36 N 1.26 N
50 – 75 cm 1.23 N 1.15 N
75 – 100 cm 1.11 N 1.02 N
The bulk specific gravity of the soil in the root zone is 1.5. The available moisture-
holding capacity of the soil is 17.8 cm/m depth of soil. Determine
i. The moisture content at different depths in the root zone,
ii. The moisture content in the entire root zone prior to irrigation, and
iii. Depth of water to be applied to bring the moisture content to the field capacity.

3. A soaking rainfall is followed by several days of warm, dry weather in midsummer.

At the end of this period, readings are taken from tensionmeters, which are located as
follows:
Point Depth from soil surface (cm) Matric Potential (cm)
A 25 -70
B 50 -40
C 75 -10
D 90 0
Locate the water table and determine the directions that water would be moving in this
soil profile.
4. Figure below shows three layers of soil in a tube that is 100 mm x 100 mm in
cross section. Water is supplied to maintain a constant head difference of 300 mm
across the sample. The hydraulic conductivity of the soils in the direction of flow
through them is given in table below. Find the rate of water supply in cm3/hr.
Soil K (cm/s)
A 4 x 10-2
B 3 x 10-2
C 5 x 10-2
