POKHARA UNIVERSITY

Level: Bachelor Semester – Spring Year : 2009

Programme: BE Full Marks: 100
Course: Basic Electronics Engineering Pass Marks: 45
Time : 3hrs.
Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far
as practicable.
The figures in the margin indicate full marks.
Attempt all the questions.

1. a) What are impurities? Explain the formation of P-type semi-conductor 8

with the help of atomic bonding structure and energy band diagram.
b) Find the current through the silicon diode at 27 degree centigrade if it 7
is forward biased by 0.6 Volt. Assume leakage saturation current of
50 µA.
2. a) Compare different transistor configurations, CE, CB, and CC. 8
b) For the given silicon transistor biased by feed back resistor method, 7
determine the operating points given that β=120.

3. a) What is rectification? “Full-wave rectifier is more effective than half- 7

wave rectifier”. Justify your answer with necessary mathematical
derivation.
b) A zener with given specification is used for stabilized supply to a
variable load as shown in figure below. Calculate: 8

4. a) Define negative feedback in amplifiers. Justify that “though the 8
negative feedback reduces the gain of an amplifier it enhances the
circuit stability.”
b) Explain, how damped oscillation obtained from tank circuits? 7
Differentiate damped and un-damped oscillation.
5. a) Briefly explain all the necessary steps involved in analog to digital 5
signal conversion method.
