A Great Lesson I Learnt “That one!” My brothers and I picked out the smallest gecko in the cage.
He was also the cutest and tamest (friendly) gecko. I opened the cage and picked the gecko up.
His smooth, white stomach rubbed against my hand. He is perfect, just perfect I thought in my
head. When we got home from the pet store, we still did not have a name for my beautiful,
tan(brown)-colored gecko with spikes. “That’s it,” my mom said. “Spike is a great name. How did
you come up with that name, Jimmy?” My mom asked me. “It was easy. His whole body is
covered in spikes,” I replied. “What else could we call him?” After that, it was official. Our new
gecko’s name was Spike. The first week we had Spike, he barely(hardly) ever saw his clean cage.
My brothers and I treated Spike like an angel. We were always playing with him. Spike was with
us when we were reading, when we were watching movies in my family room on my comfortable
black couch(sofa), and even when I was playing in my room. The only time he saw his cage was at
night. After a couple of months, Spike started to become more of a chore(routine). He was still
fun to play with, but we had to feed him those brown, nasty crickets. The crickets were ugly
insects. I also had to clean Spike’s dirty cage. Luckily, my mom helped me learn that having a pet
is fun, but it is also a responsibility. She taught me how to make cleaning more exciting. One of
the tips was pretending that every piece of Spike’s dirt I pick up is a billion dollars. My mom was
giving me the best tip ever. The tip worked so well I almost never complained again when I had
to clean Spike’s cage. Having my gecko taught me a lot about being respectful to things and
about being responsible. I also learned that you have to do a lot of things you do not want to do
in life. Lastly, I learned it is fun to have a pet, and it is a lot of work, too. "I am glad to learn so
much about taking responsibility," I told my mother with a big smile.

Read the text carefully to answer the questions. I felt like a Hero On last July,
i decided to visit the Botanical Garden which is in Godavari. It is very big and has plants
of all kinds and sizes. I entered after buying my tickets and took a stroll around the place.
While walking down one of the paths, I happened to look up and saw a nest hanging
over the branch of a tree. Two fully-grown robins were flying around making quite a
noise. They seemed very upset. I guessed right, that there were baby birds in the nest
which looked like it was going to fall any moment. I could have walked away but I
wondered what would happen to the babies if they fell to the ground. They would not
survive the fall, and if they did, they would surely die soon with all the dogs and bigger
birds around. I looked around for a stick and found a long, forked one close by. I picked
it up but could not reach the nest. It was too high up on the tree. I had to climb up
slowly, and reaching out. " Be careful, Anderson!" shouted my mom. I slowly pushed the
nest back onto the safety of the branch. The mother and father robin flew around my
head warning me to stay away. I climbed down and walked away after making sure that
nothing further would cause the nest to fall. After spending sometime walking around, I
returned home.
I visited again the next day and noticed the mother robin stuffing worms into her little
one's beaks. How thrilled I was. I had done my good deed, and even though it would not
make the headlines in the Chengdu Post, I still felt like a hero.

Dear John,
Thank you for your letter. It is so great to hear from you! I am very glad that you had a good
vacation. As for me, I also spent an enjoyable vacation. First, I went to a farmhouse with my
family. We had a lot of fun and sang songs on our way. The weather was hot and I swam a lot
with my friends. We played soccer and rode bicycles. I really liked the huge and amazing
farmhouse.
And in August, I went to Cyprus with my parents. It is a large and beautiful island in the
Mediterranean with a cool climate. We swam in the sea and were lying in the shade of huge
Eucalyptus which is a fast-growing evergreen Australian tree. We travelled along the mountain
paths and played tennis. It was a memorable summer. I also attended summer classes. Anyway,
how did your academic year begin? Are there newcomers in your class? Any new subjects? Hope
to hear from you soon.
Love,
Eric
