Hi Tom,
What’s new? I want to tell you about the great vacation that I took last month. My
family and I left Chicago on July 1st and flew to London. Then we caught a flight to one
of the most beautiful cities in the world—Venice. We were very busy every day because
there are so many great places to see. On the first day, we visited a large outdoor park,
the Giardini Pubblici. After that, we went downtown and listened to some music outdoors.
We stayed in Venice for a week, so we saw many other famous places and ate lots of
delicious Italian food. It was a wonderful trip. I took a lot of pictures with my new camera,
so I’ll e-mail you some photos.
Say “hi” to Cathy for me.
John
Hi Tom,
People all over the world need a second language. They need to talk with
people who don’t speak their language. Professional people and state workers in
many countries speak English or French as a second language. They use these
languages to do business with people from other countries. They often start to study
these languages at an early age in school and learn to speak very well. It’s very
helpful to them to know a second language.
Levi Strauss was born in Germany and came to New York in 1847. When he
was a young man, Strauss worked in his family’s business. Their business sold both
fabric and clothes. Later, when people began to find gold in California, Strauss
decided to go west to make money. Gold miners, people who look for gold, needed
strong work pants. Strauss solved their problem. He used denim, a strong cloth
made of cotton. Miners and many other workers bought these special work pants.
Today we call these pants jeans or Levi’s®.
