Introduction
Super alloy Pyrotool A is an iron based high temperature, high strength alloy. It is also a
type of austenitic precipitation hardenable alloy. It has good ductility at temperatures up
to 649°C (1200°F).
Pyrotool A provides medium strength and oxidation resistance at reasonably low cost
and at temperatures that are greater than that of stainless steels. The following sections
will discuss in detail about super alloy Pyrotool A.
Chemical Composition
The chemical composition of Pyrotool A is outlined in the following table.
Element Content (%)
Nickel, Ni 25
Chromium, Cr 14.5
Titanium, Ti 2.2

Physical Properties
The physical properties of Pyrotool A are tabulated below.
Other Designations
Equivalent materials to Pyrotool A are provided below.
Fabrication and Heat Treatment
Machinability
Super alloy Pyrotool A can be machined using all the common processes. Cemented
carbide tools are recommended for use during turning operations.
Forming
Super alloy Pyrotool A can be cold and hot formed using any of the conventional
methods.
Welding
Welding processes of super alloy Pyrotool A are similar to that of stainless steels. The
area to be welded has to be properly cleaned. Preheating or post welding heat treatment

is not required.
Forging
Light forging can be performed in the temperature range of 8711010°C (16001850°F).
Heavy forging can be done in the temperature range of 10101204°C (18502200°F).
Cold Working
Pyrotool A can be cold formed.
Annealing
Pyrotool A can be solution annealed at 982°C (1800°F) and oil quenched, which should
be followed by holding at 718°C (1325°F) for 16 h and air cooling. This treatment
enhances high strength for the alloy.
Aging
This super alloy can be aged at 718°C (1325°F) for 16 h and air cooled to gain high
strength. Prior to aging the alloy should solution heat treated.
Applications
Super alloy Pyrotool A is used in many application areas as listed below:
Rings
Liners
Holders
Mandrels
Forging dies
Dummy blocks
Extrusion dies
Hightemperature tooling.
