1.0 Introduction
To estimate the short circuit rating of 110 kV equipment, 11 kV Switchgear, Generator transformers, 11
kV cables, Unit auxiliary transformer, LT auxiliary transformer, 6.6 kV Switchgear, 6.6 kV cables, 415
V PCC & MCC, short circuit study need to be carried for auxiliary power supply system. Procedures
and calculations are summarised below.
3.0 Description
Indicative Single line diagram of auxiliary power supplies distribution showing 110kV, 11 kV, 6.6 kV
and 415 V system is enclosed. To arrive at the short circuit rating, one GTG with its UAT is considered
to be in service feeding all the plant auxiliaries as indicated in Sketch-1 below.
For each system ‘line to line fault current’ and ‘line to earth fault current are to be carried out.
For 110 kV system source, fault has been considered at F11 & F12 (That is at SPTL & SPGL
Switchyard respectively) . Fault contribution from plant generators and remote end substations have
been considered. 110 kV substation & line particulars are based on TNEB data.
To derive fault current at 11 kV system, fault has been considered at F1 (at UAT tap off ) and at F2
(near GCB) and fault contribution from 110 kV grid, Generator , 6.6 kV motors & 415 V motors have
been worked out.
To derive fault rating of 11 kV steam turbine Generator (STG) cables, fault has been considered at F3
(near STG ) and fault contribution from 110 kV grid & Generator have been worked out.
To derive fault current at 6.6 kV system, fault has been considered at F4 (6.6 kV switchgear) and fault
contribution from 110 kV grid, Generator, 6.6 kV motors & 415 V motors have been worked out.
To derive fault current at 415 V PCC, fault has been considered at F5 (near PCC of 2.5 MVA
transformer) , at F6 (near PCC of 2 MVA transformer) and at F7 (near PCC of 250kVA sea water
intake system transformer). Fault contribution from 110 kV grid, Generator, 6.6 kV motors & 415 V
motors have been worked out.
Cable impedance considered are as per ‘Sizing calculation-11kV,6.6kV & 415V Cables’ (Doc.no. SPL-
C-CAL-E-0006)

4.2 Generator Transformer (GTR-1 to 6)
According to clause 8.3.2.2 of IS 13234, Positive sequence short circuit impedance of the Generator
transformer is given by:
ZTHV = U k rT / 100 . U2 rTHV / S rT
For generator transformer considering the values as follows:
U k r T = 10.8 % (with –10% tolerance on nominal impedance of 12%)
U rTHV = 115 kV
S rT = 50 MVA
ZTHV = 10.8 / 100 x 115 2 / 50 = 28.566 ohms
RTHV = P k rT x U2 rTHV / S2 rT
P k rT = 0.150 MW for 50 MVA Transformer ( Winding loss is 150 kW as indicated by the transformer
manufacturer)
RTHV = 0.15 x 1152 / 502 = 0.7935 ohms
XTHV = (Z2 rTHV - R2 rTHV )
XTHV = (28.5662 - 0.79352 ) = 28.555 ohms
Impedance referred to 11 kV system is,
ZTLV = (0.7935 + j28.555) x 11 2 / 115 2
= (0.00726 + j 0.2614) = 0.2613 88.408 ohms
Cable impedance between Gas turbine Generator & Generator transformer , Generator transformer &
Unit auxiliary transformer are neglected as these lengths are smaller.

Zero sequence impedance of cables are normally 2 to 3 times positive sequence impedance. In view of
nn availability of correct data, zero sequence impedance is considered same as that of positive sequence,
as it would result in worst fault current.
