Experiment – 3: performance analysis of a single-phase half-wave & full wave controlled rectifier
1. Understand and learn how diode characteristics are used to rectify three-phase AC voltage to
DC voltage.
Theory:
The device which converts ac voltage into dc voltage is called rectifiers. Rectifiers produce
unidirectional & pulsating voltage from the ac source. Rectifiers offer low resistance to the flow
of current in one direction & high resistance to flow of current in the opposite direction that is
rectifier converts AC into DC. This conversion is achieved by rectifier supplied with AC signal
using step down transformer. The output contains pulsating DC (ripple voltage) which can be
removed by using a filter circuit. we have to design using PSIM. It is easy to design on the PSIM
Circuit.
Half Wave Rectifier: A Single Phase Half Wave Controlled Rectifier circuit consists of
SCR / thyristor, an AC voltage source and load. The load may be purely resistive, Inductive or a
combination of resistance and inductance. For simplicity, we will consider a resistive load. The
necessary condition for turn ON of SCR is that, it should be forward biased and gate signal must
be applied. In other words, an SCR will only get turned ON when it is forward biased and fired
or gated. SCR will only turn off when current through it reaches below holding current and
reverse voltage is applied for a time period more than the SCR turn off time.
Well, let us go ahead with the above points in mind. Let us assume that thyristor T is fired at a
firing angle of α. This means when wt = α, gate signal will be applied and SCR will start
figure with a highly inductive load so that the load current is continuous and ripple free. During
the positive half-cycle, thyristors T1 and T2 are forward biased; when these two thyristors are
turned on simultaneously at ωt = α, the load is connected to the input supply through T1 and T2.
Due to the inductive load, thyristors T1 and T2 continue to conduct beyond ωt = π, even though
Discussion: Here, we have found a single half-wave and full-wave controlled rectifier in
PSIM. As a result, we have been able to make a beautiful visual by the circuit diagram.
