DESIGN FORM FOR COOLING LOAD DETERMINATION

APPLICATION (PROJECT): COOLING LOAD CALCULATION OF FABRICATION/INNOVATION

LABORATORY 01

FLOOR DIMENSIONS (meters): 6.12 meters x 12.6 meters

CEILING HEIGHT (meters): 3.37 meters

SPACE AREA (meters): 77.12 m2

DESIGN FOR PEAK LOAD: DAY(Sunny) ROOM DESIGN CONDITION:

TIME OF DAY: 1400 hours TEMP.: 25 deg C

OUTDOOR TEMP: 34 deg C RH: 55%

Calculations for Zone 1:

Bedroom 1

I. External Cooling
Load

A. Roof

No roof since the area

is located at the first floor of the building.

B. Walls
From Ashrae 1997, Table 11, Chapter 28

Wall Construction:

Layer: Outside Surface Resistance, 100mm Face Brick, 200mm high density
concrete, Inside Surface Resistance, Finish

Material (Code Number) R(m2K/W)

Outside Surface Resistance(A0) 0.059

100mm Face Brick (A2) 0.036

200mm high density (C10) 0.177

Inside Surface Resistance (E0) 0.121

Finish (A6) 0.031

RTOTAL = 0.424 m2k/W

Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient, U

U = 1/Rt = 1/0.424

U = 2.358 W/m2K

For wall type:

From ASHRAE 1997, Table 33B, Chapter 28

Wall Types, Mass Evenly Distributed, for use with Table 32

For Secondary Material, Mass evenly distributed, R = 0.35 – 0.44

Principal wall material = C1

Then, wall type = Z

CLTDwall (Time of Interest : 1400 hrs)

From Table 8.3A, Cooling and Heating Load Calculation Manual

Wall Facing CLTDwall (1400)

E 26 ˚F

W 25 ˚F
From PAG-ASA annual (Summer 2019) Info

Tm = 34 ˚C = 93.2 ˚F

Tr = 23 ˚C = 73.4 ˚F

CLTDwall corrected = CLTDwall + (78-Tr) + (Tm – 85)

For the East Wall:

CLTDwall corrected = 26 ˚F + (78-73.4) ˚F + (93.2 – 85) ˚F

CLTDwall corrected = 38.8 ˚F = 3.78 ˚C

For the West Wall:

CLTDwall corrected = 25 ˚F + (78-73.4) ˚F + (93.2 – 85) ˚F

CLTDwall corrected = 37.8 ˚F = 3.22 ˚C

Wall Area :

East Wall

AwallE = (3.77m X 6.12m) = 23.07 m2

West Wall

AwallW = (3.77m X 6.12m) = 23.07 m2

The heat transfer between walls:

@East Wall : Qwall = (2.358 W/m2K)( 23.07 m2)( 3.78 ˚C) = 205.63 W

@West Wall : Qwall =(2.358 W/m2K)( 23.07 m2)( 3.22 ˚C) = 175.16W

C. Ceilings

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 24, Table 4

Material: Concrete

Overall Thermal Coefficient, U = 2.70 W/m2K

Ceiling Area
Area Ceiling = 77.12 m2

Thus,

Q ceiling = UA(Temp Difference)

Q ceiling = (2.70 W/m2K)(77.12 m2)(34 – 25) ˚C

Q ceiling = 1.874 kW

D. Floors

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 24, Table 4

Slab Floor

Overall Thermal Coefficient, U = 1.05 W/m2K

Floor Area

Area Ceiling = 77.12 m2

Thus,

Q floor = UA(Temp Difference)

Q floor = (1.05 W/m2K)(77.12 m2)(34 – 25) ˚C

Q floor = 730.61 W

E. Windows

E.1 Solar Load Through Glass

From ASHRAE 1997, Chaoter 27, Table 5

Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient, U:

For Glass Type, Heat Absorbing (Translucent)

U = 2.50 W/m2K

CLTD window

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 34

Time of Interest: 1400 hours

CLTD = 8 ˚C = 46.4 ˚F

CLTDwindow corrected = CLTDwindow+ (78-Tr) + (Tm – 85)

CLTDwindow corrected = 46.4 ˚F + (78-73.4) ˚F + (93.2 – 85) ˚F

CLTDwindow corrected = 59.2 ˚F = 15.11 ˚C

Area of Window

Areawindow = 0.850m x 1.35m = 1.15 m2

Thus,

Q = UACLTD(Number of windows)

Q window = (2.50 W/m2K)(1.15 m2)(15.11 ˚C)(6)

Q window = 260.65 W

II. Internal Load

A. People

A.1 Sensible

Qsensible = NQsCLF

No. of Occupants = 40 people

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 3

Degree of Activity: Moderately active: Sensible Heat, W: 75 W

Cooling Load Factor, CLF

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 37

Hours in Space (Maximum) = 12 hours (Zone B)

Number of hour after entry to the space before turned on : 10 hours

Time of interest : 1400 hours (Summer)

CLF = 0.97

Thus,

Qsensible = (40)(75W)(0.97) = 2.91 kW

A2. Latent Heat

Qlatent = NQL

QL for Moderately active: 55 W

Qlatent = 40 person (55W)

Qlatent = 2.2 kW

B. Lights

Qlights = WFUTCLF for LED lights (8 pieces)

W = 12 watts x 8 = 96 W

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 38

For zone type B, Operation: 12 hours

CLF = 0.97 FUT = 0.5

Thus,

Qlights = (96 W)(0.5)(0.97) = 46.56 W

Qlights = WFUTCLF for Fluorescent light (16 pieces)

W = 20 watts x 16 = 320 W

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 38

For zone type B, Operation: 12 hours

CLF = 0.97 FUT = 0.5

Thus,

Qlights = (320 W)(0.5)(0.97) = 155.2 W

C. Appliances

1. Water Dispenser (500W) time of usage: 8hrs/day (average)

Fu = 8hrs/24hr = 0.33

Assume Fr = 1.0

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 28, Table 37

For Zone Type B: CLF = 0.98

Thus,

Qsensible = Qin x Fu x Fr x CLF

Qsensible = (500 W) (0.33) (1) (0.98) = 161.7 W

Qlatent = Qin x Fu

Qlatent = 500w (0.33) = 165W

D. Infiltration

From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 25, Table 3

Material Description Size AL/Unit AL

Ceiling Drop 77.12 m2 1.8 138.82

Door Frame Wood 1 0.3 0.3

Doors Single 1 12 12

Electrical With Gasket 4 0.15 0.6

Outlets

Wiring Caulked 4 2 8

Walls High Density 24 m2 1.1 26.4

Block

Window Horizontal 1.15 m2 1.1 1.265

AL Total = 187.12
From ASHRAE 1997, Chapter 25, Table 6

Cs (stack coefficient) for multiple stack = 0.000435

Cw (wind coefficient) for multiple stacks = 0.000382

Temperature Difference = 34 ˚C – 25 ˚C = 9 ˚C

Max windspeed via timeanddate.com/weather/Philippines/cebu.city

V = 9 kmh = 2.5 m/s

Thus,
Qinfiltration= (AL/1000)((Cs(∆T)) + Cw(V)2)0.5

Qinfiltration= (187.12/1000)((0.000435(9˚C)) + 0.000382 (2.5 m/s)2)0.5

Qinfiltration= 0.015 m3/s x (3.28 ft/m)3 x (60s/min) = 31.45 CFM

For the Wo – Wi (During Summer, RH = 55% to 60%

Assume 55% RH

From the Psychrometric Chart,

To = 34 ˚C, Ti = 25 ˚C, RH = 55%

Wo = 0.0018 lbv/lba Wi = 0.00102 lbv/lba

Thus,

Qsensible = CpT(Qrate)

Qsensible = (1.05KJ/kgK)(9˚C)(0.015 m3/s)

Qsensible = 141.75 W

Qlatent = 4840(Qrate)(∆W)

Qlatent = 4840(31.45 CFM)(0.00078)

Qlatent = 34.80 W

E. Miscellaneous Sources

a. Ventilation

From ASHRAE Standard 62-2001, Table 2

Outdoor Requirement = 15 CFM

No. of Persons = 40

CFMtotal = 15(40) = 600 CFM

Thus,

Qsensible = 1.08CFM(∆T)

Qsensible = 1.08(600CFM)(93.2 – 73.4) ˚F

Qsensible = 3.76 kW

Qlatent = 4840 x CFM x ∆W

Qlatent = 4840 x 600 CFM x (0.0078)

Qlatent = 6.63 kW
