Science 10 Quarter 3 Week 6

Name: _________________________________________________ Date: _____________

Section: ________________________________________________ Score: ____________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Organisms inhabiting the earth have changed overtime, their structures, traits and
abilities allowed them to adapt and survive in their environment.
This learning activity sheet was designed and written with you in mind. Now, let’s
dwell on the theories of evolution by Lamarck. Get ready to learn and accomplish variety of
activities to help you understand the process and mechanism of evolution.

II. LEARNING SKILLS

MELC: Explain the occurrence of evolution (S10LT-IIIg-40)

Objectives:

1. Differentiate the three theories of Jean Baptiste de Lamarck

2. Discuss the effect of environmental changes on adaptation and survival of
species.

III. ACTIVITIES

A. Activity IA. Look at these pictures of giraffe. Then, answer the questions.

1.

Fig. 1 Giraffes acquired their long What Fig. 2 Giraffes may not long
necks through heterochrony is the neck to reach tall trees
difference between these two pictures?

2. What theory introduced by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck states that the individual organisms
made changes in themselves and passed those changes on to their offspring?

Activity IB. Identify the word that does not belong to the group. Write your answer on your
answer sheet.

1. Theory of Need Natural Selection John Baptiste de Lamarck

2. Charles Darwin Giraffe Theory of Use
3. Apes Theory of Acquired Theory of Disuse
Inheritance

Activity IC. Look around and observe how animals adapt to changes in their environment
Write them down on the space provided.

Activity ID. Answer shortly the given question.

1. Enumerate ways on how to protect our natural resources and conserve our
Biodiversity.
B. Analysis
Answer the following questions:
1. Based on Activity IA and IB, what are the three theories by John Baptiste de
Lamarck. Describe each shortly.
a.
b.

2. What are the ways on how animals adapt to their environment

a.
b.
c.

3. Underline the correct terms, choose your answers from the words enclosed in the
parentheses.

a. Which of the following statements DOES NOT describe evolution?

(Evolution is continuous, the world is stable and unchanging.)
b. Which of these theories of evolution was proposed by Lamarck?
(Theory of natural selection, Inheritance of acquired characteristics)
c. The process where individuals are better adapted to their environment,
survive and reproduce more successfully than less well-adapted individuals.
(natural selection, speciation)
d. Why does Lamarck hypothesize that species evolved?
(by mating between different species, due to changes in the inherited DNA
sequence)
e. Which of the following could not be a cause of environmental change?
(clear cutting to create farmland, forest preservation, a volcanic eruption)
C. Abstraction
What are the Theories by Jean Baptiste de Lamarck?
Jean Baptiste de Lamarck was the first evolutionist to believe that the organisms
change over time. Using fossil records as a guide, Lamarck was able to develop three
theories; one is The Theory of Need which states that organisms change in response to their
environment. Their ability to survive helped them develop characteristics necessary for them
to adapt in a given environment.
Next is the Theory of Use and Disuse, which according to Lamarck, organs not in use
will disappear while organs in use will develop. Lamarck believed that giraffes before have
short necks, but because of the need to survive and in order to reach tall trees for food, they
kept stretching their neck until these become longer and able to reach taller trees. These
acquired characteristics were believed to be inherited by their off springs and propagated by
the next generation of giraffes. Lamarck called it as the Theory of Acquired Characteristics.

What effect of environmental changes have on adaptation and survival of species?

Human beings are considered as steward of God’s creation. Some of the ways on
how to protect our natural resources and conserve our biodiversity includes proper garbage
disposal, energy conservation reuse, recycle and reduce consumption.
Changes in environmental conditions can affect the survival of an individual
organisms or an entire species. Short-term environmental changes like droughts, floods and
fires do not give populations time to adapt to the change and force them to move of become
extinct. Fortunately, body structures of some of the animals change in size to get food. They
also change their color and form to escape their prey while others produce toxin to protect
themselves.
