Science 10 Quarter 3 Week 3
Name: ___________________________________________ Date: _____________
Section: __________________________________________ Score: ____________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

All of the systems within the body interact with one another to keep an
organism healthy. Although each system has specific functions, they are all
interconnected and dependent on one another. The nervous system controls various
organs of the body directly while the endocrine system is the collection of glands that
produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue
function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things.

II. LEARNING SKILLS

MELC: Describe how the nervous system coordinates and regulates these
feedback mechanisms to maintain homeostasis. (S10LT-IIIc-36)
Objectives:

1. Explain the role of the Nervous System and the Endocrine system in
maintaining homeostasis.
2. Identify the importance of maintaining homeostasis.
3. Explain how Nervous system work together with Endocrine system to
maintain homeostasis.

III. ACTIVITIES

A. Activity 1A. Item #’s 1-8: Label the parts of Nervous and Endocrine system.
Item #’s 9-10: Supply the missing words/phrase to complete your answer.

Direction: Answer the following questions legibly. Write your answer on your answer
sheet.
What are the major organ systems responsible for coordinated functions in
human body? Explain why these are both important in enabling the body to
maintain homeostasis (5pts.)

B. Analysis
What are the roles of the Nervous and endocrine system in maintaining
homeostasis based on the given activities?

C. Abstraction

Why is Homeostasis important?

Homeostasis is maintaining a constant internal environment. Cells need their
environment to be just right in order for the cell to survive. In order to maintain this
environment organisms, need to self-regulate and make adjustments. This process
of self-regulating is called, homeostasis. If homeostasis can be maintained then
cells, and animals stay alive. If homeostasis cannot be maintained, death may occur.
In order to understand what homeostasis looks like, let us go over three examples of
homeostasis that occurs in the human body. Humans maintain a constant
temperature of about 98.5 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is how outside we sweat, and if
we get cold we shiver. The hypothalamus of the brain receives negative feedback
from the body and makes adjustments in order to keep 98.5 The body also needs to
maintain a certain amount of water inside the body. Again, the hypothalamus and
also the kidney work together to help keep the water level constant. If you need
water you get thirsty, if you have an abundance of water you urinate. Your body also
regulates the amount of sugar in your blood. The pancreas helps to regulate the
amount of blood in your bloodstream. Even the PH level needs to remain a constant
level.

Nervous system working together with Endocrine system to maintain

homeostasis.
Most body systems maintain homeostasis by using feedback mechanisms. When the
brain receives messages from the body about an internal change in one of its
systems, it works to restore the system to its normal state. The levels of hormones in
the body are controlled by feedback. It is important that the amount of hormones in
our body is kept at the right level. The endocrine system plays an important part in
homeostasis.

To achieve homeostasis (the state reached when each part of the body functions
in equilibrium with every other part) the nervous and endocrine systems maintain a
normal range of the following variables:

 Body temperature
 Amount of water in the body
 Amount of metabolic wastes in the cell
 Blood calcium level
 Hormones in the blood

D. Application

Direction: Answer the following questions based on your learnings on endocrine

and nervous system.

1. What might happen to a person whose nervous and endocrine system fail to
maintain homeostasis?
2. Suppose a boy skipped his lunch for the day. How will the hormones
(glucagon) from his pancreas help his body to cope when his blood sugar
level drops below normal?
3. Suppose a girl ate too many sweets such as candies and chocolates, how will
the hormones (insulin) from her pancreas help her body cope with a possible
blood sugar level rise above normal?
