Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences

Using Subordinate and Coordinate Conjunctions
adjective
Lesson 1.1 – What is adjective?
Adjective is a word used to modify a noun or a pronoun. It helps you express your ideas
more clearly by allowing you to give additional information about words. Adjectives also help
the readers to have a clearer picture of what the writer is talking about.

Study the following example:

I live in a peaceful community The helpfulness of our neighbors is heartfelt.

Filipino values are extraordinary

Peaceful, heartfelt, and Filipino are used ad adjectives in the sentences. They are
used to describe nouns. The nouns that they describe are community, helpfulness and
values.

Proper nouns, derived words, and compound nouns may be used as adjectives.
Study the italicized adjectives.

Proper adjectives Derived adjectives Compound adjectives

American culture friendly neighbour two-story building
Chinese proverb noisy engine well-known singer
Asian cuisine thoughtful friend three-day vacation
Santos residence colorless liquid open-minded person
Philippine territory childish behavior one-way radio

REMEMBER
• Adjective is a word that describes a noun or pronoun.
• Proper adjectives begin with capital letters.
• Adjectives may be derived from other words through to use of adjective-forming
suffixes.
• Compound adjectives consist of two or more joined to form a new meaning.
• A predicate adjective describes the subject of the sentence. It comes after a linking
verb.

Lesson 1.2 – Definitions of Subordinate and Coordinate conjunction

Coordinating conjunction joins words or sentences that independent or equal.

The coordinating conjunction that we have in English are;

For Or Nor

And Yet So

It can connect a word to another word, phrase to phrase, and clause to another clause.

Examples:

I was alone and sad

I heard her put something down and switched something on.

I cook and my siblings clean the house

Conjunction Meaning Example

For Also means “because” or one Jane stayed in the jungle for
action is the cause of the other she loves Tarzan
Nemo and Dory are my
And Means “in addition to” friends
He doesn’t have family nor
Nor Means “also not” does he have home
I can’t play with them but
But means “on the contrary” mom said I can watch.
What do you want to do
Or Indicates choices or alternative first? Eat or study/
She didn’t study anything
Yet Has similar meaning to “but” yet she passed the exams.
They can’t attend my party
So Means “as a result” so I had it cancelled.
You can put the dependent clause at the start or at the end of the sentence.

Example:

While I was in college, my younger sister was in high school.

My younger sister was in high school while I was in college.

Subordinating conjunction comes at the beginning of a clause which makes it dependent

to independent clauses.

There are a lot of subordinating conjunction in English but some of the most common are;

Since if unless because

Although that after before

When while until

5
Examples;

If it rains, I won’t go to school. I won’t go to school if it rains.
