A.Reviewing Previous Lesson or
Presenting the New Lesson
The teacher will give a brain storming activity
with an inquiry- based instruction strategy
using a table to get the initial idea of the students
on the synonyms of dependent and independent
variables.

There are many situations around you that show functional

relationships between variables or quantities so that one
variable or quantity depends upon the other.

Ex.
The perimeter of a square
𝑠 = 3 𝑐𝑚 depends on the length of its side.
As the side of the square
𝑃 = 4(3 𝑐𝑚) = 12 𝑐𝑚 increases, the perimeter also

P=4s 𝑠 = 5 𝑐𝑚
increases. The example shows a
one-to-one correspondence
between the side and the
𝑃 = 4(5 𝑐𝑚) = 20 𝑚 perimeter of a square.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the The goal in this lesson is for you to learn and understand the key concepts of Dependent and
Lesson Independent variables.

Determines dependent and independent variables. (M8AL-IIc-3)

Objectives: 1. Define dependent and independent variables

2. Identify a variable as dependent or independent
3. Determine whether a variable is dependent or independent
C.Presenting
Examples/Instances of the
Lesson Suppose that you’re father working in Robinson’s. He earn Php 300 per day. His total
earnings in a month are related to the number of days of work. During this pandemic time he
only work 15 days a month. How much will he earn if he work only 15 days in a month?
Where does your total earning depends on?

I think you’re right. How about

I guess it’s ₱ 4,500.00. It depends on when there is no COVID-19 yet,
the number of days he work. how much he earned in 30 days?

It’s ₱ 9,000.

D.Discussing New Concepts and Dependent and Independent Variables

Practicing New Skills #1 In an equation where y is expressed in terms of x , the variable x is considered the independent
variable because any value could be assigned to it. However, the variable y is the dependent variable
because its value depends on the value of x .
Variables may be dependent or independent. Dependent variable depends on the independent
variable while the independent variable controls the dependent variables.

E. Discussing New Concepts and Examples:

Practicing New Skills #2 1. Supply and demand to the price of a product
Independent variable: Supply and demand
Dependent variable price of a product
 We consider Supply and demand as an independent variable because it controls the price of a
product.
 We consider price of a product as a dependent variable because it depends on the Supply and
demand .
For example, we have a shortage of supply and a huge of demands in pork, that’s why the price of
the pork increase.
According to the new in INQUIRER.NET,

2. The amount of water and the size of the plants.

Independent variable: amount of water
Dependent variable: size of the plants
 We consider amount of water as an independent variable because it controls the size of the
plants.
 We consider the size of the plants as a dependent variable because it depends on the amount of
water .

3. The time spent online to the data usage.

Independent variable: time spent online Dependent variable: data usage
 We consider time spent online as an independent variable because it controls the data usage.
 We consider the data usage as a dependent variable because it depends on the time you spent
online.

F. Developing Mastery Activity 1

(Leads to Formative Directions: Determine the dependent and independent variables in the given
Assessment 3) situation.
1. time spent in printing and the number of modules produced
Independent variable: _______________________________________
Dependent variable: _________________________________________
2. cubic meter consumed and the water bill
Independent variable: _______________________________________
Dependent variable: _______________________________________
3. amount of sugar in the coffee and the sweetness
Independent variable: _______________________________________
Dependent variable: _______________________________________
4. number of activities in math and the time spent in answering
Independent variable: _______________________________________
Dependent variable: _______________________________________
5. the distance you travel and the amount of fare
Independent variable: _______________________________________
Dependent variable: _______________________________________
G. Finding Practical Activity 2 (GROUP ACTIVITY/ COOPERATIVE LEARNING)
