Field Study 1: The Learner's Development and Environment

Episode 3
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT AND LEARNING

MY TOOLS

An Observation Guide for the Learners' Characteristics

 As you observe the class, look into the characteristics of the learners. Note their ages.
 How many boys are there? How many girls?
 Focus on their behavior. Are they already able to manage their own behavior?
 Can the learners' already work independently?
 Describe their span of attention.
 Look into their listening skills and ability to concentrate.

Name of the School : Malinta National High School

Observed : Mrs. Maria Fe Sañosa, II- Emerald 5:50 pm – 6:50 pm
Location of the School : A. Pablo St. Malinta Valenzuela City
Date of Visit : September 9 , 2019

Here is my observation in this class. The ages of the students ranges from 13 to 15 years old. The class has 29
male and 24 female students, a total class population of 53. The class was having a discussion that time. Some students
were just quietly focusing on the discussion, while are some were having fun interacting with the lesson. One good thing
is that everyone was listening and no one was roaming around the classroom. The teacher and students were happily
having their discussion. The students were very enthusiastic, and I felt the respect they have for their teacher. They were
very much aware of their behavior. Clearly, somehow, I have seen a sense of responsibility in their actions. They can
stand on their own, and work independently. And their attention to the lesson was good considering that their teacher
was having a positive vibes teaching the lesson. Most of them were good listeners and were able to concentrate.

Name of the School : Malinta National High School

Observed : Ms. Emily F. Lazaro, II- Garnet 5:50 pm – 6:50 pm
Location of the School : A. Pablo St. Malinta Valenzuela City
Date of Visit : September 12, 19 and 26, 2019

Here is my observation in this class. The ages of the students ranges also from 13 to 15 years old. The class has
26 male and 27 female students, a total class population of 53. The class had a reporting and discussion during those
times. Confidence was not an issue that time because the teacher conducted an activity, somewhat like a talent
competition at the end of every reporting. They showcased a different type of personality upon the execution of their
talents. If it is about the lesson, it seems like they are not confident in a sense that they are just afraid of giving wrong
information. Everyone was listening and no one was roaming around the classroom. The teacher and students were
happily having their reporting and discussion. The students were very enthusiastic too. They were very much aware of
their behavior as well. Like in Emerald, I have seen a sense of responsibility in their actions. They can stand on their own,
and work independently. And their attention to the lesson was good considering that pieces of prizes were being given
by the reporters for every correct answer in an oral quiz. Most of them were good listeners and were able to
concentrate.

Here is my observation in this class. The ages of the students ranges from 14 to 16 years old. The class has 29

An Observation Guide for the CLASSROOM VISIT

1. Are there areas in the classroom for specific purposes (storage of teaching aids, books, students' belongings, supplies,
etc.)
2. Are there rules and procedures posted in the room?
3. Did the students participate in making the classroom rules?
4. What are the daily routines done by the teacher? (prayer, attendance, assignment of monitors, warm-up activities,
etc.) How are they done?
5. Is there a seating arrangement? What is the basis of this arrangement?
6. Observe the noise level in the classroom. How is this managed?
7. If a learner is not following instructions or is off-task, what does the teacher do? (behavior strategies)
8. What does the teacher do to reinforce positive behaviors? (behavior strategies)

Observation notes:

While I was observing, 2 of the rooms I have observed didn’t have any cabinets for storage, while the last one
has an item for storage, though it’s an open storage. I didn’t see any rules and procedures posted in the room. I believe
that the students have taken their part in making the classroom rules. The class starts with a prayer then continues with
the review of the past lesson. The class discussion follows and ends with a prayer also. The seating arrangement is in the
basis of alternation (boy, girl) process. The reason for this arrangement is that the students will be able to socialize well
and orderly to the opposite sex. The noise level of the classroom is just moderate depending on the mood. Sometimes
they are very serious; while at sometimes they are happy while participating, that it becomes noisy. This noise level is
managed by the teacher by talking to the students. The teacher provides a disciplinary action. She would normally ask
nicely why he or she did not follow and will make the students realize that they should follow. The teacher always stands
up as a role model and through proper advice; she’s able to reinforce positive behavior.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT MATRIX

Aspect of Classroom Description Effect on the Learners

Management
1. Specific Areas in the The areas in the classroom are organized The room became conducive for the
Classroom and clean learners that it made learning more
effective
2. Classroom Rules On the onset of class discussion, rules The learners become cautious about
are being discussed their actions.
3. Classroom Procedures Teacher was trying her best to build It made the students feel comfortable
rapport to get the attention of the leading to better discussion and learning
learners
4. Daily Routines The teacher always starts with a prayer The learners became respectful and God-
and a greeting the proceeds with a short fearing. It helped the refresh learning
review
5. Seating Arrangement Boys and girls are seated alternately Learners tend to socialize better with
everyone especially with the opposite
sex
6. Handling misbehavior/ Through silent actions, the teacher The learners are always reminded of
off-task behavior showcased behavior management proper behavior and respect for
everyone
7. Reinforcement of The teacher commended her students by The learners strived harder and
Positive Behavior saying very good or giving them prizes participated more specially during
recitation
MY ANALYSIS

1. How did the classroom organization and routines affect the learners' behavior?

The classroom organization and routines evidently affected the behavior of the students in a positive way, in a
manner that they were still able to enjoy the class discussion without compromising the respect that the teacher
should be receiving.

2. What should the teacher have in mind when he/she designs the classroom organization and routines? What
theories and principles should you have in mind?

The teacher should always have in mind to choose the best but the right practices not for his students.
Considering the variations of interests of the students, the teacher should become realistic rather than being
idealistic. Behavioral theories will help the teacher understand his students more. A principle of context, through
field experiences, may it be personal, social or community understanding, may also be a help for the
organization and routines in the classroom.

3. Which behavior strategies were effective in managing the behavior of the learners? In motivating students? Why
were they effective?

It is always positive to see the learners striving hard. The use of positive reinforcement greatly helped the
learners become motivated. The calling of the attention of the learners through questioning have helped the
learners became more focused on the discussion.

MY REFLECTIONS

1. Imagine yourself organizing your classroom in the future. In what grade/year level do you see yourself? What
routines and procedures would you consider for this level? Why?

I see myself teaching high school students. Building good rapport, prayers and some talks will greatly help me
get the attention of the learners. To show a little knowledge of their interests will make them listen to me and
eventually lead to good lesson discussions.

2. Make a list of the rules are likely to implement in this level. Why would you choose these rules?

Mandatory will be the proper wearing of school uniforms and ID’s; The cleanliness and orderliness inside the
classroom; The raising of hands if they want to answer or say something; choosing these will help the learners
be more disciplined and responsible. Learning shall then follow.

3. Should learners be involved in making the class rules? Why?

The success of class discussion is dependent on how the teacher will rule the class with a consideration on how
the students would want to be ruled objectively. The teacher should set rules that are objectively acceptable so
that they would not be afraid of learning. Rules should be set to give students an environment that is always
open for positive learning.
