1. DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION.

A. DESCRIPTION

(1) This manual contains maintenance and overhaul instructions for the Eutectic
Automatic Fire Extinguishers containing 0.3kgs of FE36 extinguishing agent.

(2) The extinguisher vessel contains extinguishing agent FE36. The extinguisher is
designed to be installed within the aircraft lavatory compartments in a fixed
position and has the ability to detect and suppress fires in areas within 1 metre
from the main body of the extinguisher. Each extinguisher consists of a container
onto which the extinguisher head is fitted. The head incorporates a remote arm,
fill valve and gauge. The remote arm terminates in a special detector/discharge
nozzle. The unit is installed in a bracket, which clamps the extinguisher in place,
with the remote arm being suitability clipped as required at four (4) separate
locations.

(3) The container is of a seamless construction, being an aluminium extrusion, with a

wall thickness of 1.7mm and a burst pressure of 55 bar (798 psig). The container
is permanently screwed onto the head and is sealed by nitrile ‘O’ rings.

(4) The detector/discharge nozzle consists of a heat sensitive capsule, which in its
passive mode, retains the discharge valve in a closed position. On sensing thw
operating temperature, the capsule melts, permitting the valve to open allowing
the discharge of the FE36 extinguishant via the discharge nozzle.

(5) Extinguisher Variations.

Each Part Number defines the extinguisher and quantity of extinguishant, and
components used in the extinguisher assembly.

The defined Part Numbers / Dash numbers are factory controlled and must not be
changed.

The procedures described in this manual are applicable to extinguisher variations

as associated with this Component Maintenance Manual.

(6) Installation.
The Eutectic Automatic Fire Extinguishers are designed to be installed in aircraft
cabinets, with the arms run to the areas to be protected. The remote copper arms
may be shaped to suit the installation. The bracket is to be installed in the upright
position.

CAUTION: CONTINUED REPOSITIONING OR SHAPING OF THE

EXTINGUISHER ARMS CAN WORK HARDEN THE ARM
MATERIAL, AND THEREFORE SHOULD BE AVOIDED. THE
ARMS ARE PRESSURISED WITH FE36 AT 8.6 BAR (125PSI).
CAUTION: DO NOT BEND THE ARMS WITHIN 1.0” (25mm) OF THE
EXTINGUISHER HEAD OR DETECTOR/DISCHARGE NOZZLE OR
SUBMIT THE ARMS TO ANY ROTATIONAL TORQUE.

Once the arms have been shaped to the installation requirements, the arm must
be clipped to suitable cabinet structures etc. Distance between clips is recom-
mended to be 150mm or less, with a clip no further than 150mm from the extin-
guisher head and 50 mm from the detector/discharge nozzle.
The detector/discharge nozzle must not be more than 300mm from the item or
area being protected.
After installation is completed, check to ensure the following:-
a) Arms are correctly clipped, and all clips are installed.
b) There are NO sharp bends or kinks in the arms.
c) Extinguisher is secure within the Bracket.
d) Gauge is showing FULL or in the GREEN sector.
e) Ensure Detector/Discharge nozzle assembly is correctly sited and free of
contaminates and waste material.

B. OPERATION
General
On sensing the operation temperature, the heat sensitive capsule, within the
special detector discharge nozzle assembly melts. Extinguishant pressure lifts the
Viton sealing ball and associated seal support, spring coil and piston nozzle,
which, prior to the eutectic melting held the Viton sealing ball in place. Extinguish-
ant is then released via the discharge nozzle.
On discharge, the pressure indicator will fall to zero. Average discharge time for
0.3Kg fill of extinguishant is between five (5) and fifteen (15) seconds.
