1. Pupils look at the names “Area 51, Teotihuacan and The Bermuda Triangle written on the board.
2. Pupils discuss as a class whether they have heard of any of the names.
PRE-LESSON 3. Pupils turn to English Download page 17 English Download and read the instructions and the 3 pictures in
Activity 2 and then discuss as a class what they can see.
4. Pupils match the photos to the descriptions and check their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.
LESSON 5. Pupils turn to English Download page 18 and read the instructions and the 8 words in Activity 1.
DEVELOPMENT 6. Pupils discuss and tick which creatures they believe in or do not believe out of the 8 creatures given and justify
each choice with at least 1 reason in groups of 4 (Complementary Skill).
7. A few groups share their discussion with the class.
8. Pupils remain in their groups for Activity 2 and discuss whether they think some of the creatures in Activity 1
are more likely to exist than others and to identify which ones.
9. Pupils now look for a new partner to explain to their new partner the ideas of their previous group for Activity
2.
10. A few pairs share their discussion with the class.
11. Pupils go on to Activity 3 and read the instructions and read the following questions on the board:
 What is the writer’s attitude towards Sarah Winchester?
 What is the writer’s attitude towards Winchester Mystery House?
12. Pupils skim read ‘A house of mystery’ to answer the question in Activity 3 and the 2 questions on the
whiteboard and search for evidence in the text to support their answers. (Main Skill)
13. Pupils discuss their answers in pairs before discussing as a class.

Differentiated Actvities:
Less proficient pupils: Grouped into small groups and read the text together. While reading, stop at relevant places
and ask questions to help pupils identify the writer’s opinions as opposed to facts.
More proficient pupils: -
14. Pupils review their learning in this lesson by having a discussion in pairs about haunted houses. Do pupils
believe the Winchester Mystery House was really haunted by spirits or was Sarah Winchester imagining
