GRADE 8 (QUARTER 1)
Module 8.2

GRAPHING A SYSTEM OF LINEAR EQUATIONS

IN TWO VARIABLES

I. Introduction:
This module will guide and help you on how to graph system of linear
equations in two variables.

II. Objective:
In this learning module, the students must be able to graph a system
of linear equations in two variables.

III. Vocabulary List:

• Coinciding Lines – overlapping lines
• Intersecting Lines – lines that meet at exactly one point.
• Parallel Lines – coplanar lines that do not intersect.
• Slope – The steepness of a line. The value of 𝒎 in a linear
equation when written in a slope – intercept form 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.
• System of Linear Equations – also called as simultaneous linear
equations. A set or collection of linear equations, all of which must
be satisfied.
• 𝒙 – Intercept – The value of 𝑥 when the value of 𝑦 is zero of a
linear equation. The 𝑥 – coordinate of the point when the line
intersects the 𝑥- axis.
• 𝒚- Intercept - The value of y when the value of 𝑥 is zero of a linear
equation. The 𝑦 – coordinate of the point when the line intersects
the 𝑦 – axis.

IV. Pre-Test:

𝑥 + 2𝑦 = 4
3. Which of the following is the graph of the system { ?
𝑥 − 3𝑦 = −3
A. C.

B. D.

V. Learning Activities:

The graph of a system of linear equations in two variables are

two lines. From the previous modules, you learned how to graph
linear equations in two variables. Remember that you have
various ways on how to draw its graph given the following:
1. Two points
2. 𝑥 and 𝑦 – intercepts
3. Slope and 𝑦 – intercept
4. Slope and a point

2
Learning Situation #1
Graphing Using the Intercepts
𝑥 + 𝑦 = −1
Let us graph the system { by
𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3
using their intercepts. Take note that you
need at least two points to draw a line.

From the given, both equations are written

in the standard form.

To find the 𝑥 – intercept, you let 𝑦 = 0; and

to find the 𝑦 – intercept, you let 𝑥 = 0.

Equation #1:
𝒙 – intercept 𝒚- intercept
Let 𝑦 = 0 Let 𝑥 = 0
𝑥 + 𝑦 = −1 𝑥 + 𝑦 = −1
𝑥 + 0 = −1 0 + 𝑦 = −1
𝑥 = −1 𝑦 = −1
The corresponding point is (−1,0) The corresponding point s (0, −1)

Equation #2:

𝒙 – intercept 𝒚- intercept
Let 𝑦 = 0 Let 𝑥 = 0
𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3 𝑥 + 𝑦 = −3
𝑥 + 0 = −3 0 + 𝑦 = −3
𝑥 = −3 𝑦 = −3
The corresponding point is (−3, 0) The corresponding point is (0, −3)

For equation #1, plot the points (−1,0)

and (0, −1) on the coordinate plane and
draw the line. While for equation #2, use
the points (−3, 0) and (0, −3).
Notice that the graph of the system
𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 3
{ are parallel lines which
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 2
has no solution.

3
Learning Situation #2
Graphing Using the Slope and 𝒚-intercept
𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 3
Let us graph the system {
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 2
by using their intercepts. Notice that the
equations are written in the slope-
intercept form. You can you use the 𝑦-
intercept and the slope of each line to
draw their graphs.
For equation #1, 𝒚 = −𝟐𝒙 + 𝟑, the slope
is −2 and the 𝑦-intercept is 3 which has
a corresponding point of (0, 3). Since,
you need two points to draw a line, you
use the slope −2 to locate the other
point.

𝑟𝑖𝑠𝑒
Remember that the slope m is the ratio of the rise and run, m =
𝑟𝑢𝑛
−2
Since your slope for equation #1 is m = -2 or , your rise is -2 and run is 1.
1
From your first point (0,3), you move 2 units downward and 1 unit rightward.
Thus, your second point is (1, 1). Connect the points and draw the line.

For equation #2, 𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 − 𝟐, the slope is 3 and the 𝑦-intercept is −2 which

has a corresponding point of (0, −2). Since, you need again two points to
draw a line, you use the slope 3 to locate the other point.

3
Since your slope for equation # 2 is 𝑚 = 3 or , your rise is 3 and run is 1.
1
From your first point (0, −2), you move 3 units upward and 1 unit rightward.
Thus, your second point is (1, 1). Connect the points and draw the line.

Observe that the graph of the

𝑦 = −2𝑥 + 3
system { are
𝑦 = 3𝑥 − 2
intersecting lines with a solution of
(1, 1) which is the point of
intersection.
