ABOUT THE CONFERENCE The very first Conference of All India Machine Tool Design and Research (AIMTDR)

was held in 1967 at Jadavpur University. Subsequently, it has been renamed as All India Manufacturing Technology, Design and Research (AIMTDR) and has been popular among professional circules as a unique forum for presentation and discussion of original research and development in the broad area of Manufacturing. The AIMTDR Conference, held once in two years, has always reflected the changing scenario in manufacturing and has provided the much needed focus for future growth. In view of its wide global acceptance, AIMTDR has been declared as International Conference since 2006. The 1st International & 22nd AIMTDR Conference was held at IIT Roorkee during December 21 23, 2006 while the 2nd International & 23rd AIMTDR Conference was held during December 15-17, 2008 at IIT Madras as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. The present 3rd International and 24th AIMTDR Conference is being organized by the Andhra University under the stewardship of Prof. Beela Satyanarayana (the first Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University from engineering discipline) during December 13-15, 2010. SCOPE AND THEME OF THE CONFERENCE Manufacturing is and will remain as one of the principal means through which wealth is created. The emergence of new manufacturing technologies, spurred by intense competition, will lead to unprecedented innovative and new products and processes. It is thus essential that the manufacturing industry be prepared to implement advanced manufacturing methods in time. A critical step in preparing for the future will be the development of an underlying technical foundation through research by industry, academia, and government institutions, which must be guided by a clear vision of manufacturing in the 21st century and an understanding of the fundamental challenges that must be met to realize this vision. Economic growth and international competitiveness mostly depend on the generation and transfer of knowledge and technology. The aim of this conference is to provide an interdisciplinary platform for managers, engineers, researchers and students to discuss and promote early dissemination of research results and technology transfer in all areas of manufacturing technology, product design and automation. The present conference with a focused theme on Global Trends and Challenges in Design and Manufacturing comes at an appropriate time when India and the whole world are going for major expansion in Manufacturing Technology. Manufacturing has benefited the world economy with recent developments in technology and management. Information and communication technologies, micro and nano technologies, computer applications in design, analysis, manufacturing, control and decision making areas are in the forefront. Global competition with complex economic ramifications, increased awareness on the environmental implications has made the manufacturing highly challenging and significantly different among comparable fields. A pre-conference workshop on Challenges in Micro and Nano Manufacturing: Indian Perspective in the Global Scenario is proposed during December 11-12, 2010 to supplement the conference theme. One of the key indicators of technology maturity in any national context is the significant presence of its products and variants in the global market place. The lack of Advanced Technology Products of Indian genre in the domain of mechanical engineering and associated fields warrants the dire necessity to gain a foothold and catch up with new and innovative technologies. The present conference aims at addressing this vital issue. CONFERENCE TOPICS 1. Material Processing: Casting, Forming, Joining, Processing of non-metals, Composites and advanced materials, Surface engineering, Process modeling. 2. VISAKHAPATNAM THE CITY OF DESTINY Visakhapatnam flanked by the clean sprawling golden beaches on one side and the majestic easternghat mountain ranges on the other is geographically located at an excellent vantage on the East coast between the two IITs, viz., IIT Kharagpur and IIT Madras. Visakhapatnam, one of the most rapidly expanding industrial cities with population spilling over 20 lakhs, was once ruled by the Andhra kings of Vengi, the Cholas and the Gangas. This port city is bound to keep you enthralled with its scenic beauty and clean beaches and more so the hospitality of the people. On a clear day, Visakhapatnam presents a very impressive view from the nearby Khailashgiri hills. Visakhapatnam is the headquarter of Eastern Naval Command of Indian Navy. Located midway on Howrah and Chennai railway line, the city of Visakhapatnam is well connected by direct links with Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkatta, Banglore, Hyderabad and other important places both by rail and air. During the month of December weather in Visakhapatnam will be very pleasant with average temperatures ranging between 20 to 270C and provides congenial atmosphere for fruitful deliberations at the 3rd International and 24th AIMTDR Conference. ABOUT THE HOST INSTITUTION Andhra University (AU), established in 1926, is one of the oldest and premier Universities imparting higher education in India. The University has been offering a wide range of graduate, post graduate and research programmes in various disciplines in Arts, Science, Law and Engineering. Since its inception, the University has been in the forefront in educational sector and has the unique distinction of initiating academic programmes in state of the art and innovative programmes for the first time in the country in disciplines like Chemical technology, Meteorology and Oceanography, Geophysics, Marine Engineering and Architecture, Biochemistry, Bioinorganic, Nanotechnology, Biotechnology etc. The coveted positions occupied by innumerable number of alumni of this University both in India and abroad are a testimony to the quality of education provided by it. Award of A grade with 3.65 grade over 4.0 point scale by the NAAC and recognition as one of the 14 academic institutions in India for outstanding research contributions to Indian science and engineering research based on H index reflects its unique capabilities. The Andhra University College of Engineering (AUCE) backed by its strong academic departments and research labs for over 54 years and spread over an area of 167 acres imparting professional and technical education to more than 3000 students is the first State Engineering College to be conferred autonomous status. The AUCE offers 16 UG and 39 PG programmes in addition to research and consultancy. The NBA has accredited the AUCE for 5 years while the MHRD has conferred IIT status and has adjudged it, the best and the lead institution in the State of AP under the TEQIP programme. TOURIST LOCATIONS Visakhapatnam, the Port city is a jewel on the East Coast of India.
