Application
The 124.1 measures, with strictly digital principle, any variable that can be digital rate
transmitted as the frequency of a continuous pulse train: specifically speed
and flowrate. Mostly used speed signal sources are non-contact sensors,
preferably of inductive type, incremental encoders connected to a shaft, or
pulse wheels run on a web surface, or AC-tachogenerators. Flow or mass
flow transmitters with any type of pulse output will serve as a signal source.

Function
The 124.1 employs two channels, M and B. Each measures the signal fre- measurement of two
quency (pulse rate) evaluating the pulse distance to determine the absolute variables and
value of the speed or flowrate. A minimum time can be programmed for the computing ratio or difference or
measuring interval, to achieve a corresponding averaging effect. Each chan- sum
nel has its own scaling adjustment.

Display
The absolute rates M and B are shown in /sec, or /min, or /h.
From six quantities measured and computed, the program offers a choice of quantities displayed
two to be displayed alternatively. The selection includes:
absolute rate M,
absolute rate B,
ratio M/B,
percentage difference (M-B)/B
absolute difference M-B
absolute sum M+B

Signal lights (1) and (2) indicate the switching of the display.
The display has 5 digits (or, 4 digits with sign), LED, red, 13 mm size.
Decimal point selected by program.

Display Step-Down after Input Interrupt

In normal operation, the display closely tracks the input sequence, with the Display performance at input
programmed performance. After a sudden interrupt of the input pulses, the signal interrupt
instrument reduces the readings following an automatic step-down sequence.
This starts as fast as the most recent measuring sequence before interrupt,
but then decreases slower and slower (reciprocal) until it meets the pro-
grammed low end.

Note: The memorizing function refers to the quantity actually selected for MAX/MIN
display. memory
The C 124.1 permanently pursues the maximum and the minimum of the
quantity. Each of both extremes may be recalled to display, and previous
values be cancelled, by the front keys only:
Key calls the maximum value when depressed.
Key calls the minimum when depressed.
Touch key to cancel all previously stored extremes, starting a new memo-
rizing period.

Measurement memory - Hold display

An external control signal may hold the display on its last measurement, as hold last measurement
long as the signal is present. Analog output and alarms (options) are not
affected by the hold function.

Display Switching
With two variables preselected, the display may be switched from one to the remote switching of the display
other, by either pressing key , or by external signal (programmable).
Signal lights (1) and (2) indicate the one on display. Select two out of the six
provided quantities by programming steps P03.02/03.
Switching may be inhibited by program step P03.03.
The external switching from 1 to 2 may externally be achieved by a positive
signal at input B1. Variable No.2 will be displayed as long as input B1 is
held positive (only C-Verison).
The same input may be programmed however not to switch from 1 to 2 but
to hold the actual measurement on display. Program step P03.06 determines
which of both functions is valid.

Alarms (option)
One of the six available quantities may be selected for monitoring. Both alarm functions
alarms refer to this same quantity, with freely programmable setpoints and
hysteresis characteristics.
Power-off condition, and starter condition may be programmed, common to
both alarms. The starter conditions prevails for a programmable period of
time (up to 999 sec), throwing the output to the preselected condition.
Signal lights (3)= SP1 and (4)= SP2 are assigned to the alarms.

Alarm outputs are available as:

- relay contacts for 250 volts/1 amp/100 VA alarm outputs
Note: inductive loads must have a spark-extinguishing device!

124.1-Manual_EN_Rev 07 20.07.2019 8
Analog output (option) analog output
The analog output may be assigned by program to each of the six available
measuring quantities of the 124.1.
Alternatively as DC-voltage or current signal, with or without live zero.
Isolated from signal input and power supply. Protected against external
short-circuit.
High end and low end of the conversion range are freely programmable, for
optimum adaption to the controller, meter or recorder connected to the out-
put.
Notes: When tracking differences (M-B or M-B/B) the high and low end can
be set between 99999 and -9999 (MSD can be set to 0..9 and -).
The value for the high end has to be higher than that one for the low
end.
Example for the negative range: high end = -1000, low end = -2000.
Resolution: 12 bit.
Current output: Full scale 20 ma into 500 ohms as max load.
Voltage output: Full scale 10 volts, with max 3 ma load (only for D-
Version).
DIP-switches must be set to requested mode "current / voltage" (page 9)

Safety Notes
This instrument has been designed and inspected according to standards DIN
57 411 / VDE 0411Sect 1, and IEC 348. Observe these instructions and
wiring diagrams carefully, to ensure this protection. The installation must
only be done by adequately qualified personnel.
General Instructions
Specifically, connect the ground terminal of the instrument to a safe ground
potential.
Do not open the instrument. Connections and all programming are done
from outside. When removing it from its enclosure however, from whatever
reason, make sure that power is switched off.
The instrument may be installed in any position, but not in the immediate
neighborhood of interfering sources.
Signal leads must be carefully shielded, and should not be run in bundles
with power or relay control leads.
The ground terminal (PE) is internally separated from common zero, but tied
by a 100 k resistor to it.

EMI
The unit complies with all relevant regulations, as determined by the Policy EMI
of the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization
(CENELEC), for the Electromagnetic Compatibility (89/336/EWG). Testing
and inspection has been performed according to Standards DIN-EN 50081-2
and DIN-EN 50082-2 with status November 1994. Thereby, the product
meets all requirements to be marked by the CE sign.
Strict observance of these instruction during installation and use is an indis-
pensable precondition hereto. Specifically to be observed:
Terminals must be kept off all undue access;
power supply and all input and output leads must be protected against volt-
age interference, higher than specified operation data, and they must be
protected against electrostatic discharge.

This may prove practical during the installation phase to facilitate the ad-
justments. Once installed, the key function should be reactivated, by pro-
gramming parameter 0 in this step.

Minimum Measuring Period

All rate measurements are based on a time interval measurement over a
(variable) number of input signal pulses. A programmable minimum meas-
uring period thus will be maintained, automatically including more input
pulses into every measurement with increasing input frequency. This estab-
lishes an averaging over the programmed period of time, which helps to
stabilize the measurements, specifically with fluctuating variables. As a averaging
standard, a minimum time of 0.4 sec is recommended. A shorter period over
should only be selected to trace a fast variation (by the analog signal or minimal period of time
alarm). A longer period however reduces the maximum allowable input
frequency, as listed below.
Parameter P00.03 defines the minimum measuring period of time, with a Step P00.03:
number of steps available: minimum measuring time

0= 0,03 s 100 kHz
1= 0,07 s 100 kHz
2= 0,1 s 100 kHz
3= 0,4 s 100 kHz
4= 0,8 s 75 kHz
5= 2,0 s 30 kHz
6= 5,0 s 12 kHz
7= 10,0 s 6 kHz

Note: The display-updating-sequence will be defined in a separate program step (P03.05).

Parameter Group P01.xx:
Measurement Configuration, Scaling Input M
scaling input M
Scaling defines the relation between the input signal frequency (in terms of
Hz), and the corresponding display (in the unit term and decimal position signal frequency (Hz):
required by the application). Both values are freely programmable by their Step P01.00 =
decimals and numerical amount. Of course, they must refer to the same number of decimals,
operation level. This reference point is recommended close to the high end Step P01.01= value.
of the intended operation range. In later operation however, it may be over-
run without error. Example:
An encoder with 100 pulses/revolution has a shaft-speed of 1537.44 rpm corresponding value of quantity
when the roll travels at a speed of 1500 m/min. With this as the reference (any term):
level, the corresponding signal frequency calculates to: Step P01.02 =

Step P01.03 = value
Therefore, 2562.4 (Hz) and 1500 (m/min) are the data-set to be programmed
in the corresponding program steps:
Step P01.00 parameter 1 (= 1 decimal)
P01.01 parameter 2562.4
P01.02 parameter 0 (= no decimals)
P01.03 parameter 01500.
General Note to Resolution:
Do not use too many decimals! If there are more decimals than justified
by the operational fluctuation of the variable, and the transmitter resolu-
tion, the minor digits in display will fluctuate accordingly, and also the
analog output will not be stable.

This same applies to the display of the absolute difference M-B and sum
M+B. Step P03.01:
For the ratio M/B and the percentage difference (M-B)/B, the decimals in decimals for (M-B)/B
display can be defined independently. Set the required number of decimals
as parameter in the corresponding program step. Do not use too many deci-
mals (see note on page 11)!

General Note to Ratio and Difference at the low end of range:

Obviously, ratio and percentage difference can no longer be expressed if one
of its variables drops below its low end. Either value would be questionable.
Therefore, the display reads ----- under this condition. Analog output and
alarms maintain their last position.

Display Selection
Each of the 5 quantities within the 124.1 may be assigned to be displayed. Step P03.02:
Assigns quantity displayed

The parameter determines the quantity to be displayed:

0 = display of M
disengage
1 = display of B
display switching
2 = display of M/B
3 = display of (M-B)/B
4 = display of M-B
5 = display of M+B
Step P03.03: not relevant
LSDs on zero
If the display of the variable uses 3 or more digits, for application reasons, Step P03.04:
the lesser significant digits (LSD) may appear fluctuating if the variable zeroing LSDs
does not have adequate stability. To avoid irritations by not significant dig-
its, a number of them may be permanently kept at zero.
Set the parameter to the number of LSDs to be kept on zero.

Display updating sequence

Independent from the response time used for other functions, the display Step P03.05:
may have its own up-dating sequence - again in the interest of stablized and display updating
well legible readings. Set the parameter to the time in steps of 0.1 sec. A
recommended value is 0.3 sec.

parameter 2 = switch display (1) -> (2), when B1 is positive.

able in the C 124.1. Selection by means of the parameter in program step Step P04.00:

High and low end of analog output span

If the analog output is assigned to either M, or B, or M/B, its high and low
end may be programmed in two steps: Step P04.01:
P04.01 defines the high end, high end of analog output
P04.02 defines the low end. Step P04.02:
Both limits are set by the same terms as already defined for the display.
low end of analogue output
Note:
This allows the low end to be set as high as 90 % of the high end, result-
ing in a 10 times spreading (enhancement) of the converted band.
Further enhancement is not recommended.
Note:
When tracking differences (M-B or M-B/B) the high and low end can be
set between 99999 and -9999 (MSD can be set to 0..9 and -).
Note:
The value for the high end has to be higher than the for the low end.
Example for the negative range: high end = -1000, low end = -2000.
Example for the positive range: high end = 4000, low end = 1000.

Analog output zero level

The parameter of this step defines: Step P04.03:
parameter 0: without live zero zero level of analog
parameter 1: with live zero output
The difference mode should be operated without live zero.
This selection is valid for both ma or voltage output.

Output Signal Mode

The output is available as either dc-current (max value = 20 ma) or voltage
(not for D-Version and E-Version, max value = 10 volts). Step P04.04
The selection requires a corresponding parameter in this program step, and output mode

Alarm Setpoints
The setpoints SP1 and SP2 are programmed by the same terms as selected
for the display of the quantity to be monitored (see step P05.00). Alarm Setpoints
step P05.01 defines setpoint SP1,
step P05.02 defines setpoint SP2. Step P05.01: setpoint SP1

Each setpoint is freely adjustable over the entire range. If M-B or (M-B)/B is Step P05.02: setpoint SP2
monitored, the MSD may be signed (0..9 and -).

Alarms Hysteresis Alarms hysteresis bandwidth

Hysteresis bandwidth as a percentage
The hysteresis between condition "excess" (>) and "no excess" (<) is indi- of setpoint's value
vidually set for both setpoints. Step P05.03 for SP1
The hysteresis bandwidth is defined as a percentage of the corresponding Step P05.04 for SP2
setpoint (xx% of value SP) :

Hysteresis position
The hysteresis band may be placed above setpoint, below setpoint, or sym- hysteresis position
metrically around the setpoint.
"Above" means, the alarm goes to excess state (>) ,when the variable ex-
ceeds "setpoint plus tolerance", and it cancels to no-excess (<), Step P05.05 for SP1
when the variable drops below setpoint. Step P05.06 for SP2
Set parameter 0 for this performance.
"Below" means, the alarm goes to excess (>), when the variable exceeds the 0 = above SP
setpoint, and it cancels to no-excess (<), when the variable drops 1 = below SP
below "setpoint minus tolerance". 2 = around SP
Set parameter to 1 for this performance.
In "symmetrical" mode, the alarm goes to excess (>), when the variable
exceeds the setpoint by half the tolerance band, and it cancels to
no-excess (<), at half the tolerance below setpoint.
Set parameter to 2 for this performance.

Without power supply to the C 124.1, the alarm outputs are non-conducting, Step P05.07:
and the relays (if any) are de-energized. To consider safety aspects of the defines No-Power condition
application, this No-Power condition can be assigned to either alarm > or < to alarms.

Starter condition of alarms

A control signal at input B3 throws both alarm outputs to a programmable Step P05.08:
condition for an adjustable period of time. This may be required for the defines starter condition
starting period of a machine or process. for alarms.
Individual selection for both alarms by a corresponding parameter: state during starter time for:
SP1 SP2
Selection of ">" means: while start-condition, alarm is set to "> setpoint" parameter = 0 < <
(standard-selection for stand-still-applications). 1 > <
Selection of "<" means: while start-condition, alarm is set to "< setpoint" 2 < >
3 > >

The start time period (elapse) is set in program step P05.09, with Step P05.09:
range 000...999 sec. starter time period
