TEACHER SAB’S REFLECTION PAPER

1. What values were revealed in Teacher Sab’s decision to choose a teaching

career in a public school over a medical career as a development
pediatrician? What factors helped Teacher Sab to make her choice?
Teacher Sab’s decision made her question the real Vocation in life. She
revealed that there are three factors she considered, her Passion (what Is
making her alive and what is life giving for her), Skill (what she can do in
life and for others), and Need (need that she wanted to fulfill), which results
her with Vocation as the three met in the middle of choosing.

2. What connection do you see between Teacher Sab’s commitment to teach

in a public school, and being an empowered leader?
Teacher Sab wanted to know how the cycle of poverty and system of
education in the Philippines happens and affected such a big number of
students, especially those from public schools and that in public schools is
where a big number of students are enrolled and made her go deeply and
understand her desire for being a teacher. As she became a teacher, she
also, got engaged with the organization she called as My Town Tita’s which
she described as a group full of empowered leaders. Here she explained
how leadership and follower works. She said that empowerment “not
because you have power that does not mean you have to show it off or tell
proudly” and “When you know you have power, you also know humility, to
have power to tell yourself that this is not the time for I to lead, but this is
the time that I must follow”.
To connect, being a teacher and a leader, you must know how to follow
those around you, your students, and those you are leading, that as you
follow you will learn how humility and honesty works for you and for those
around you. As she work and walk with them, she learned through them
and as she learn, she also learned how to develop and commit to her
values in life.
3. Would you say that Teacher Sab’s journey is a convincing example of
living one’s values? In what ways was this demonstrated?
I would say yes and is actually a very convincing and inspiring story of a
living one’s value. She became a foundation for those students who cannot
support themselves like Jayson. Her journey in life was not easy, just as
she changed her vocation from medicine field to educational field. She
lived her own life and not being decided by someone. And instead, she
lived an authentic life developed her values in life and experience from
those students, those children, those whom she works with at TOWNS,
and those whom she met in her journey. She’s living for herself while being
able to help others too. Her journey was demonstrated through her sharing
her own story, by being an inspirational speaker for the listeners, she
reflected on her own values before and after her encounter with those
students.

4. What new learning or realizations did you gain about being a good leader,
and a good person? How does this make you feel? How would your
behavior be influenced by this new learning?
I gained a learning on how to become aware of how I should recognize my
position in life. That if ever I am an employee or employer, a leader or
member, a listener or speaker, you must know how to acknowledge help,
blessings, excellence of others and yours, humility, and lessons you left
and what they left for you. Being a good leader and a good person means
you know how to realize your goals for you and how you wanted to help
others reach their goals also. It made me feel inspired to be honest,
through my life, I’ve never experienced listening to a speaker telling a story
about public school students life as I have never experienced their life
though I am limitedly knowledgeable about it, and thanks to this video, I
feel like I need to reflect more on myself, explore more about the world,
listen to people and their story, just as how Teacher Sab listened to her
student telling her how she made her Christmas tree from scratch. My
behavior is influenced in content. That I should be thankful for what I have,
which I am.
