 Embodied energy in Half Brick Thick wall :-

Assumptions:-
 Size of wall = 2m*5m*0.1m (Volume 1m3)
 Ratio of Cement : Sand = 1:4
 Type of brick:- Standard class 2 bricks (19*9*9)
 Plaster :- 12mm thick on both sides
 w/c ratio = 0.3
Quantity Calculation:-
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑤𝑎𝑙𝑙
 No. of bricks required =
𝑆𝑖𝑧𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑛𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑙 𝑏𝑟𝑖𝑐𝑘

1
= 0.002

= 500 nos

 Volume of mortar required for masonry = 500*Nominal Size of brick – 500*Standard size of brick
= (500*0.2*0.1*0.1) – (500*0.19*0.09*0.09)
= 0.2305

This quantity should be increased by 33% to compensate for Frog and to covert wet volume into dry
volume.
⸫ Dry volume of mortar required = 0.2305*1.33
= 0.306 m3
 Volume of mortar required for Plastering = 2*(2*5*0.012)
= 0.24m3
This quantity should be increased by 23% to covert wet volume into dry volume.
⸫ Dry volume of mortar required = 0.24*1.23
= 0.2952 m3
 Total volume of mortar required = 0.2952 + 0.306
= 0.6012 m3

 Weight of Cement required = 0.6012 * (1/5) * 1440

= 173.15 kg

 Weight of FA required = 0.6012 * (4/5) * 1650

= 793.584 kg
 Weight of bricks = 500 * 2.1
= 1050 kg

CE51 Assignment 1

 Weight of water required = 0.3 * 173.15
= 51.94 litre or kg

Embodied energy Calculation:-

Item Embodied energy per kg Quantity (kg) Total embodied energy
(MJ/kg)
Bricks 3 1050 3150
Cement 4.6 173.15 796.49
Sand 0.1 793.584 79.36
Water 0.2 51.94 10.388
Total 4036.24

⸫ 1m3 of half brick thick masonry has 4036.24MJ embodied energy.
