Lesson 1.1 Relations and Functions

This document provides information and examples about functions and relations. It defines a function as a special type of relation where no two ordered pairs have the same first element. Functions must have each domain element mapped to exactly one range element. Examples show how to represent functions using tables, equations, graphs and mappings. Students are asked to identify whether examples represent functions or mere relations, and specify their domains and ranges. They are also given activities to represent functions in different ways and identify if relations meet the definition of a function.

Module 1 – The Function Notation

Lesson 1.1 Relations and Functions
Key Points:
1. A function [f(x)] is a relation in which no two ordered pairs have the same first element. It
is a special type of a relation.
2. Characteristics of a function
a) Each element in domain (x) must be matched with exactly one element in range ( y ).
b) Some elements in y may not be matched with any element in x.
c) Two or more elements in x maybe matched with the same elements in y.
4. Mere relation is a relation that is not a function.
3. Ways of representing a function
a) mapping or arrow diagram d) equation
b) table of values
c) graph
4. Domain ( input) is the set of all values of x in a function.
5. Range(output) is the set of all values of y in a function.
Note: All functions are relations but not all relations are functions.
Examples:
1. Represent the rule “ Add 1 to each x – coordinate with a table of values, an equation, a graph
Or diagram
Solution:
a) Table of values
Input ( x) Output ( y)
0 1
1 2
-1 0
x x+1
b) Equation: y = x + 1
c ) Graph y

2. Tell which of the following represent a function or a mere relation. Determine the domain
and
and range

Given function/ mere Domain Range

relation
1. {(I,4),(L,5),(O,6),(V,8)} function { I,L,O,V } { 4, 5, 6, 8 }
2.{(4,5), (4,6),(5,5),(5,6)} mere relation {4} {5,6}
3. { (1,4), (2,4),(3,4),(4,4)} relation { 1, 2, 3, 4 } {4}
4. mere relation {L,V} {R,M}

5.

f(x) -2 -2 3 -4

6. x² + y – 4 = 0 function

Activity 1. Represent Me !!!!

Represent the rule “ y is obtained by adding 1 to the square of x” with a table of values, an
equation, a graph and mapping.
Activity 2. Identify and Put Me in the Right Place
Determine whether or not each of the following is a function or mere relation. Give the domain
and range.
