SERVICE INFORMATION LETTER (SIL)

IF EXPERIENCING MINOR LEAKAGE OF OXYGEN AT REGULATOR, AT -40 F AND

REGULATOR TURNED ON, FOR ALL CYLINDER ASSEMBLY P/N’S 176XXX-XX
SHIPPED BEFORE OCTOBER 10, 1998. THIS EXCLUDES THE FOLLOWING
REGULATORS:
SMALL PORTABLE REGULATOR USED ON CYLINDER ASSEMBLY P/N’S:
176900-XX
176948-XX
176960-XX
176965-XX
ALL HEAVY DUTY REGULATOR P/N’S:
172180
172206
172212
172233
172234.

1.0 Subject: If operators are experiencing leaks in their oxygen system at -40 F with
the regulator turned on and have traced the cause to the regulator, then the main nut will
need to be torque per a new improved torque procedure. This applies to only the large
body regulator used on the above mentioned cylinder assemblies shipped from B/E
Aerospace - Puritan Bennett Oxygen Systems, 10800 Pflumm Road, Lenexa, Kansas
66215 USA before October 10, 1998.

2.0 Action required by the customer:

2.1 After confirming minor leakage at the regulator, at -40 F with regulator turned on,
and the regulator falls in the part number category mentioned above, please return the
regulator, or cylinder assembly, to B/E Aerospace - Puritan Bennett Oxygen Systems or
authorized repair station, to have the improved torque procedure applied to the main nut.

2.2 If you have cylinder assemblies and regulators not leaking, then no action is
required. No leakage indicates the main nut torque is proper and the new torque method
does not need to be applied.

3.0 Solution:
Not all regulators exhibit this leakage. The typical leakage rate experienced is 2 to 3 lpm.
Thus, the leakage rates are very minor with no high flow or sudden depletion safety
concerns.

4.0 Detailed Instructions:

The following instructions apply only to OEM’s and B/E Aerospace - Puritan Bennett
Oxygen Systems authorized repair stations.
The following tools will be necessary to complete the torque procedure:
1) 2 ton vertical press capable of accepting a torque wrench connection on the pivot arm
- Figure 1
2) PN 970630 Spanner Wrench for main nut - Figure 6
3) PN 970506-01 Upper Arbor Press Fixture - Figure 7
4) PN 970506-02 Lower Arbor Press Fixture - Figure 8
5) Torque wrench
a) 0-400 in-lbs (or equivalent) ‘click stop’ type
b) 0-150 ft-lbs (or equivalent) dial type

4.1 Tool Setup:

Reference figure 1. Attach PN 970506-01 Upper Arbor Press fixture to end of arbor
press rack, on 2 ton arbor press. Attach PN970506-02 Lower Arbor Press fixture to base
of arbor press, making sure square cutout is in line with vertical rack.

4.2 Torque Procedure:

In figure 5, remove cap, detent ring, adjusting nut and 4 ball bearings, from top half of
regulator. Remove fittings as necessary to allow regulator to fit in lower arbor press
fixture. Place PN 970630 Spanner Wrench on main nut (figure 2). Engage Upper Arbor
press fixture into holes on top of regulator cap and lock the upper fixture in place with set
screw on side of rack. Attach 0-150 ft-lbs dial type torque wrench to nut on pivot arm
shaft (figure 3). Set 0-400 in-lbs ‘click stop’ torque wrench to 200 in-lbs and attach to
spanner wrench positioned at a right angle to spanner wrench. With 30 ft-lbs applied to
the arbor press pivot arm, torque main nut 200 in-lbs (figure 4). Apply Glyptol paint to
main nut in line with old Glyptol location on body. Do not remove old Glyptol from nut or
body, as the new and old Glyptol location shows the new torque method has been
applied. Attach any fittings removed previously. Install 4 ball bearings and adjusting nut.
Reset lock up pressure per appropriate regulator ATP. Install detent ring and cap.
