1. Figure 1 shows the underground floor level of a LRT building. Using your own words,
briefly explain the objective of reinforced concrete design for the underground floor
level of the LRT building design.
• The objective of reinforcement is to give concrete more strength where it's
required. When concrete is in tension, such as in slabs, the steel guarantees
all the tensile strength.
• Steel reinforcement placed in the top or upper segment of the slab thickness
limits the widths of random cracks that may form due to concrete deformation
and temperature restraints, subbase settlement, and applied loads.
• It adds to the compressive strength of concrete in slabs, as well as providing
additional shear strength in beams over and above that of concrete.
• Reinforced concrete structures that are properly designed are remarkably
durable and sturdy, making them suitable to withstand the train's loads.
