ACTIVITY # 1

1. What are the basic activities in manufacturing process? Explain and attached 1
example of an image of manufacturing process.

-Manufacturing is the process of turning raw materials or parts into finished goods
through the use of tools, human labor, machinery, and chemical processing.

2. What is sand casting? Attached 1 example of an image of schematic

representation of sand casting process and explained.

- The traditional method of casting metals is using sand molds, and has been done
for millennia. Sand casting is still the most prevalent form of casting, led by China
(about 45 million metrictons per year), followed by India and the U.S. Typical
applications of sand casting include machine bases, large turbine impellers,
propellers, and plumbing fixtures.
- Parts manufactured using sand casting come in a wide range of sizes and weights
and have complex geometries using a variety of metals. The use of sand as the
casting material significantly reduces the cost of the casting process. In the metal
mold process, the machining of the molds accounts for a large portion of the costs.
With sand casting, the type of sand used in the process depends on whether the sand
will be reused or disposed of. In green sand sand casting, the molds are reusable
while in the dry sand casting process, the sand is thrown away.
Sand casting is used for metals with high melting temperatures, such as titanium,
steels, and nickel and is the only casting process that can work with those materials.
It is the choice of the aerospace and automotive industries for producing low cost,
small series parts.

3. What is die casting?

-The die-casting process, developed in the early 1900s, is a further example of

permanent-mold casting. Typical parts made by die casting are housings for
transmissions, business machine and appliance components, hand-tool components,
and toys. The weight of most castings typically ranges from less than 90 g to about
25 kg. Equipment costs, particularly the cost of dies, are somewhat high, but labor
costs are generally low when the process is semi- or fully automated. In the die-
casting process, molten metal is forced into the die cavity at pressures ranging from
0.7 to 700 MPa. Die casting (or Pressure die casting) is essentially permanent mould
casting in which pressure forces the molten metal into the mould cavity. However,
the mould used is much more expensive (it is called a “die”) and a complex machine
is employed to produce casting at a very high rate. If the molten metal is forced into
a metallic die under a gravity head (as done in sand cavity) the process is known as
“Gravity die casting” or “Permanent mould casting”. The mould is normally called
a metallic die with two halves. One half is fixed and the other is movable. Die
materials like medium carbon, low alloys, hot steels are used. The die carries all
details required on the casting and then molten metal is forced into the cavity. Die is
cooled by circulating water to increase the life (of die).

4. What is die casting step by step process?

- To recap, high-pressure die casting generally consists of four steps: preparing

the mold, injecting the mold with molten metal, ejecting the newly created cavity
from the mold, and separating scrap metal from the cavity.
5. Why it is call die-cast? Attached 1 example of an image of die casting?

- Die casting is a type of metal casting that uses the process of forcing molten
metal into two steel dies that make up a cast. Die casting is typically used in a high-
volume production setting and is known for producing a high-quality, consistent
product.
