SIXTH FORM BULLETIN Week Beginning 21st November 2011

ASSEMBLIES - an extract from Les Miserables Year 13 Tuesday 22nd November Year 12 Thursday 24th November UCAS APPLICATIONS Please do note hesitate to see Julie Calder if you are still struggling to make decisions regarding university course choices or would like some help structuring your personal statement. She is available during the school day on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. SIXTH FORM OPEN EVENING Record numbers of students and parents attended last night sixth form open evening including 80+ external students and their families. We were delighted to have received so many positive comments from our visitors. I would like to thank all the students and staff for all their hard work leading up to the event. Every department looked fantastic; the students were, as always, great ambassadors for the school. Mrs Salt OCR BUSINESS Congratulations to Year12 OCR Business Studies students for all completing their Business presentations this week. Well Done. Mrs Lucas LIBRARY NEWS Our newly remodelled Library at SBS has been described as a "Centre of Excellence for school libraries in Hertfordshire" by Herts Schools Library Service. This is fantastic recognition of what we have achieved here. Mrs Syme (Librarian) will be running a Resources Clinic every Tuesday at break for EPQ students who are unable to book one hour appointment slots due to timetabled lessons. Please let her know in advance that you will be attending by contacting library@simonballe.herts.sch.uk. Many thanks, Mrs Syme PSYCHOLOGY FILM CLUB - Monday 21/11/11, 3:30 in the Lecture Theatre Psychology film club - aimed at Y13 Psychologists but all sixth form are welcome. We will watch a film with popcorn and treats and then analyse it using our Psychological brains! Film to be announced soon! GEOGRAPHY LECTURE Dr Viv Jones will be speaking to sixth form students about Climate Change and the Arctic. All A Level Geographers are required to attend but if anyone else would like to come a long then please email Miss Baynham to book a place. Dr Jones is one of our governors and a lecturer at UCL. The lecture will take place in the Lecture Theatre on Monday 12th December at 15.45 until 16.45. INTERESTED IN STUDYING ABROAD? Amy Newnham from "Degrees Ahead" is coming in on Tuesday 29th November at 3pm to talk to any students interested in studying abroad for a degree. She will have information on all aspects of studying at universities from across the world. Please sign up for a place via the sheet on the careers board or see Julie Calder for more information. Subject-based workshops at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge Applications are now open for our subject-based workshops at Gonville and Caius College, University of Cambridge. These workshops are intended to give the most able students a taste of university study at Cambridge, and will feature lectures, group work and the opportunity to meet current students and lecturers. They are intended primarily for students in Y12 who hope to apply to competitive universities, but they are also suitable for highly-motivated students in Y11. All workshops are free of charge, including lunch on the day. Friday 10 February 2012 - Uncovering the Past. Friday 17 February 2012 - New Research in the Sciences Friday 24 February 2012 - Technology in the 21st Century Friday 2 March 2012 - Literature and Language.

DEADLINE............... the deadline for the subject based workshops at Gonville and Caius colleges,Cambridge is Monday 21st November. They have been advertised on the bulletin for the last 2 weeks. If you would like to apply for these courses you need to let Julie Calder know by this date. STUDENT FINANCE ENGLAND Were launching a dedicated Student Finance England hub on the Student Room website today as part of Student Finance Day (14 November). The section of the Student Room website will give users the latest news, advice and tools for all students, including those considering going to university in 2012/13. Students and prospective students should visit: www.thestudentroom.co.uk/studentfinance Were also running Student Finance England surgeries on our social media channels on Facebook and Twitter, answering queries from prospective and current students and their parents. Students can follow Student Finance England at facebook.com/SFEngland and twitter.com/sf_england to take part in student finance surgeries. A representative from Student Finance England will be visiting us on Tuesday 22nd November. They will be in the common room between 12:00 and 3:00. Yr 12 Sociology Revision Conference Thursday December 1st. We had such excellent feedback from the Yr 13 students last term that we have decided to offer the Yr 12 sociologists a similar opportunity. 10 to finance office by Friday 11th. Mrs Adshead

CHRISTMAS FAIR Friday 9th December - Sign up, get involved and make money! You may have noticed the posters that have been put up around the school site advertising this event. The students organising this event now need you to sign up and take part - details on the white board. LES MISERABLES HELP NEEDED If anyone would be interested in helping to design and paint the set for the school production of Les Miserables, please see Dulcie Wagstaff, 13 SEM RUBBISH As most of you are aware we are preparing to stage 'Les Miserables' at the end of term. The art department have taken on the task of the set and are looking for all manner of rubbish that can be sprayed up to become the barricade and to add to the general feel of miserableness. Items such as old bike wheels, crates, barrels etc would all be welcome. If you can provide anything can you speak to Clare McHaffie or Jane Mackervoy. OPEN EVENING CAKE SALE Thank you to everyone who supported our fundraising, so far we have raised 96 for Breast Cancer Campaign.
