Second Semester

Course Subject: CHEM 1 Course Title: Inorganic Chemistry Lecture

Course Credit: 5 units

Course Description
The course covers fundamental concepts of chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium
(including acid-base chemistry and solubility equilibrium), thermodynamics and
electrochemistry. It also deals with solution chemistry, especially reactions in aqueous
solutions as well as group properties and reactions of elements as an introduction to
qualitative analysis of cations and anions.
Course Outcomes: At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Display a basic and comprehensive understanding of knowledge and
principles of inorganic chemistry;
2. Apply scientific principles in solving current inorganic problems;
3. Use scientific inquiry in understanding and explaining natural phenomena;
4. Determine the uses of common inorganic compounds that exist in the
environment
5. Demonstrate knowledge in formula writing and naming inorganic
compounds

Critiques:

The Chemistry course syllabus for Inorganic Chemistry at Surigao Del Norte State
University provides a structured approach to teaching fundamental concepts in the field.
The syllabus covers a range of topics including chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium,
thermodynamics, and electrochemistry. While the syllabus offers a comprehensive
overview of inorganic chemistry principles and incorporates diverse assessment methods,
there are areas that could be further enhanced.
The syllabus's strength lies in its clear organization, detailed course outcomes, and
inclusion of various assessment methods like quizzes, group projects, and laboratory
reports. However, a potential critique could be the limited emphasis on practical
applications of the theoretical knowledge gained, which could enhance students'
problem-solving skills and real-world relevance. Additionally, while the syllabus outlines
assessment components, there may be room to further promote student-centered
learning approaches to enhance engagement and critical thinking among students.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths:
1. Comprehensive Coverage: The syllabus covers essential topics in inorganic
chemistry, providing students with a solid foundation in fundamental principles.
2. Assessment Diversity: The inclusion of quizzes, group projects, and laboratory
reports ensures a comprehensive evaluation of students' understanding.
3. Clear Objectives: The course outcomes are well-defined, outlining the expected
knowledge and skills students should acquire by the end of the course.

Weaknesses:
1. Limited Practical Application: While the practical application of the topic is
conducted in a separate course, integrating more practical examples and case
studies within the Inorganic Chemistry course could enhance students' problem-
solving abilities.
2. Enhanced Student-Centered Learning: While the syllabus outlines assessments
and interactive discussions, more emphasis on student-centered learning
approaches could foster greater engagement and critical thinking.
3. Interdisciplinary Connections: Integrating interdisciplinary connections with other
scientific fields could provide a more holistic understanding of chemistry concepts.

Recommendations:
A. Enhance Practical Applications: Integrate real-world examples and case studies to
demonstrate the practical relevance of inorganic chemistry concepts, even if
practical application is conducted in a separate course.
B. Promote Student-Centered Learning: Implement more interactive sessions,
discussions, and problem-solving activities to foster active participation and critical
thinking.
C. Interdisciplinary Integration: Include references to how inorganic chemistry
intersects with other scientific disciplines to provide a broader perspective.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the Chemistry course syllabus at Surigao Del Norte State University
offers a solid foundation in inorganic chemistry principles. While the syllabus
demonstrates clear organization and diverse assessment methods, there is
potential for improvement in enhancing practical applications, fostering student-
centered learning, and promoting interdisciplinary connections. By incorporating
these recommendations, the syllabus can better equip students with both
theoretical knowledge and practical skills, preparing them for future challenges in
the field of chemistry.
