Unit 6: Past lives

Topic 2: Visiting the Past

Scene Unit 6b: VISITING THE PAST

1 Welcome to the next lesson: 6b: Visiting the past.

What are you going to learn today?

In this lesson, you will listen for details to complete sentences, learn about past simple
form of irregular verbs, negative and questions. Then, you will tell your partner things
you did in the past.

I have a question for you.

Did people in primitive societies live in houses or caves?

I think you’ve got the answer. They lived in caves, so caves were important to them,
right?

2 These 2 photos show a woman doing different activities in the caves. Look at the photo,
and answer:

Why do you think the caves are important to the woman?

(pause)

Maybe she lives there; she loves visiting them; she is studying / exploring / protecting
them.

We don’t know for sure.

Now listen to part of a TV documentary and check your answer from Exercise 1.

(pause)

So, does she live there? Or is she exploring the cave?

The answer is she grew up in the cave with her family.

3 Now, listen again and complete these sentences with a word from the documentary.

These are the answer.

1 The caves are in the Mustang region of northern Nepal.

2 Humans made the caves about a thousand years ago.

3 Many people lived in them until the 15th century.

4 The caves were warm and dry.

5 Yandu Bista was born in a cave.

6 In the end, her family moved to the town, but she says, ‘I like living in a cave
better.’

4 Look at the grammar box about past simple irregular verbs.

“Many common verbs have irregular forms in the past simple. These forms do not end in
‘ed’.

Go -> went

Bring -> brought

Build -> built

Do -> did

Have -> had

Make -> made

And many others.

Here is an example:

I/You / He / She / It / We / They grew up in a cave.

I / You / He / She / It / We / They didn’t live in a house.

Now, look at the sentences again and answer these questions.

1. Do English verbs in the past simple end in -ed?

No, because they have different forms in past simple.
2 Do the verbs change in the third person (he/ she/it)?

No, we can see all of the subjects use the same verb. They don’t change in the third
person.

3 What auxiliary verb do you use for negative sentences?

We use ‘didn’t’ in negative sentences.

So, some verbs are added ‘ed’ in the past simple form. They are called ‘regular verbs’.
You learnt about regular verbs in the last lesson, already. However, some other verbs
change their form. They are called ‘irregular verbs’, so you have to learn them by heart.

For negative sentences, we use ‘didn’t’ and V – infinitive like in regular verbs.

5 Complete the sentences with the past simple form of the verb. (Some verbs are regular
and some are irregular.) Then listen and check.

(pause)

Let’s check the answers.

1 Humans ________made___ (make) the caves about a thousand years ago.

2 Many people _____lived______ (live) in them until the fifteenth century.

3 They __built_________ (build) houses and ___________ (move) to towns.

4 Yandu Bista _____was______ (be) born in a cave.

5 She _____grew up______ (grow up) here with her family.

6 They ____didn’t have_______ (not have) water in the cave.

7 She ______went_____ (go) to the river every day and _____brought______

(bring) water up the mountain.

6 Now complete the sentences with these irregular verbs:

be, get, go, grow up, have and leave.

First, the past simple form of these verbs are irregular. What are they?

Be -> was / were

Get -> got

Grow up -> grew up

Have -> had

Leave -> left

Now, read the sentences and complete them with the irregular forms.

So, the answer is:

1. Was
2. Grew up
3. Went
4. Got
5. Had
6. left
7 Now rewrite the sentences in Exercise 6 so they are true for you. You can use the
negative form of the past simple and change other words.

For example,

1. I was born in 1939.

You can change the year so it is true for you.

I was born in 1990.

8 So now you know that, we ‘add’ ed or change the form of verbs in past simple in
affirmative sentences.

For negative sentences, we add ‘didn’t and V – infinitive, What about question form?

Take a look at the grammar box.

“What did you do at the weekend?” I met some friends”

Where did you go? We went to a museum

Did you go to the cinema? Yes, I did. No I, didn’t.

What auxiliary form do you use in past simple questions?

We use ‘did’

Did + S + V-infinitive?
9 Now, let’s practice the negative and questions of past simple with this exercise.

Then listen and check the answer.

(pause_

The answer is:

1. Did
2. Did
3. Didn’t
4. Did
5. Did
6. Didn’t
10 Now, write six short sentences about what you did yesterday, using the past simple form
of these irregular verbs.

Get up, go, meet, have, buy, take.

For example:

I got up at six o’clock.

I went to the supermarket.

11 This is the end of the lesson.

Thank you and bye for now.
