Problems on Binomial Distribution

1. The probability of happening of an event in an experiment is 0.4. Find the probability of

happening of the event atleast once if the experiment is repeated 3 times under similar
conditions.

2. The incidence of a certain disease is such that on an average 20 % of workers suffer

from it. If 10 workers are selected at random, find the probability that (i) Exactly 2
workers suffer from the disease (ii) Not more than 2 workers suffer from the disease.

3. The occupational hazard in an industry is such that the workers have a 20 % chance of
facing it. What is the probability that out of 6 workers, 4 or more will face the hazard.

4. If the chance that a vessel arrives safely at a post is 9/10, find the chance that out of 5
vessels expected, atleast 4 will arrive safely.

5. An oil exploration firm finds that 50 % of the test wells it drills yields a deposit of Natural
gas, if it drills 6 wells, find the probability that atleast one well will yield gas.

6. The probability that a bomb dropped from a plane strikes its target is 1/5. Find the
probability that out of 6 bombs dropped, atleast 3 bombs strike the target.

7. Find the probability that in a family of 5 children, there will be (i) atleast one boy (ii)
atleast one boy and one girl, assume that the probability of a female birth is ½.

8. If 20 % of bolts produced by a machine are defective, determine the probability that out
of 4 bolts chosen at random (a) 1 (b) 0 (c) atmost 2 bolts will be defective.

9. A bag of 100 bulbs from a manufacturing company is known to contain 10 defective

bulbs. If a sample of 6 bulbs is selected at random, what is the probability that there is
atleast one defective bulb.

its standard deviation 4”. If no inconsistency is found, what shall be the values of p, q
and n ?
