A box‐shaped vessel 120m long and 20m beam floats at an even keel draft of 6m and
has a compartment 15m long at the extreme fore‐end. The bilged compartment has a

watertight flat 4m above the keel and permeability of 40%. Calculate the final drafts
if this compartment is bilged.

c Correcting angle of loll has to be done with caution taking into consideration the very
delicate stability of the vessel. This is rectified by either adding weight to the low part of
the ship or removing weight from the high part. Ballasting of DB is usually preferred. Centre
tanks, if any, should be ballasted first followed by tanks on the low side. Select tanks with
the smallest breadth as this will reduce the free surface effect during the ballasting
operation. Ballasting the centre tanks or tanks on the low side will improve the ship's GM.
However, care should be taken as this will cause a far greater list.

0.1094 (63072 + w) = (12.4894w)
6900.0768 + 0.1094w = 12.4894w
12.38w = 6900.0768
w= 557.3568 tonnes (No.4 DBT Stbd)
Ballast No.4 DB stbd tank until full (643 tonnes) by which time the ship would have positive
stability. Then ballast No,4 DB port tank to bring the ship upright.
