PROCEDURES
A. Preliminaries Prayer Everybody stand.
Before we start, class let’s all stand up. In the name of the Father …Amen.
And let us pray. Lord God, thank you for this
wonderful day. Thank you for the
blessings we receive every day and
for your guidance and protection.

are so sorry for the sins that we
committed. May this day be a new
day to learn and to do good things
for others. Amen!

Good morning ma’am. Good

Greetings morning classmates!
Good morning, class

(picking up the pieces of paper

Setting of standards under the chairs)
Before you take your seats, kindly pick (sitting down)
up the scattered pieces of paper and
arrange your chair properly. Yes ma’am, everybody is present
today.
Checking of attendance
Is everybody present for today?

Wow, That’s great!

Recalling Class Rules

If you want anything to clarify, feel free
to directly ask me.
If you want to answer, don’t say it in
chorus instead raise your hand.
Listen carefully in our class discussion.

Is that clear? Yes, Ma’am.

B. Reviewing Last meeting we already discussed about

Previous the Measures of central tendency. As a
Lesson or review, let us have a short game called
Presenting New “SUBWAY SURF”
Lesson
Are you familiar with this game? Yes ma’am.
That’s great.

I will divide you into two groups. I will

give each group a piece of cardboard
where you will write the group answer
Am I understood?

Okay let’s start.

Very good! Any questions and

clarifications?
C. Establishing a Since you already familiarize about
purpose for the measures of central tendency, let us
lesson proceed to our next lesson.

Now, let’s do this activity called Shade Me!

Instruction: Shade the circles that correspond to
the given data values in Data Set II. Data Set I is
done as your reference.

Data Set I: 40 38 42 40 39 39 43 40 39 40

Compare your result in Data Set II to Data Set I.

The two sets have the same mean, median, and
mode which is 40. In the Data Set I, the values are
closer to the center while in the Data Set II the
values vary greatly.

If we are going to associate how each data set

scatter away from the center or cluster close to

it, we will come up with new quantities which are
called measures of variability.

Today we will discuss about measures of

variability. Our objectives for today are
the following: please everybody read.

a. knowledge: Define terms related

to measures of variability.
b. Calculates the measures of
variability (variance and standard
deviation) of ungrouped data.
c. Demonstrate appreciation on the
importance of the measures of
variability.

When do you think we usually use the We usually use the measures of
measures of variability? variability it describes the number
of spread for the data set.
exactly! Thank you.
D. Presenting In getting the difference of two data is also
examples or getting the Range of the data where: miss
instances of
kindly read please.
the new lesson Range is the difference of the largest
value and the smallest value.

It is also the simplest measure of variability.

In getting the range this is the formula.

R= Hs- Ls (highest score- lowest score)

Aside from range, we also have the mean

deviation. Please read it’s meaning ______. • Also called Average deviation.

• It indicates how far the data

values are spread out from the
mean value.
In short in getting the mean deviation you
should get the mean average from the mean of
the data given sets.

To compute the Mean Deviation of an

ungrouped data, we use the formula:
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education
Cordillera Administrative Region
SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE OF ABRA
DUGONG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9
∑ |𝑥−𝑥̅ |
M.D. = 𝑁

Where:

M.D. is the mean deviation

x is the individual score

𝑥̅ is the mean; and

N is the number of scores.

|𝑥 − 𝑥̅ | is the absolute value of the deviation

from the mean.

In solving mean deviation, there are

procedures or steps: Kindly read _____. 1. Find the mean for all the cases.

2. Find the absolute difference between

each score from the mean.

3. Find the sum for the mean deviation of

the differences and divide it by N.
In order to get the correct answer, the
procedures must strictly followed.

E. Discussing Illustrative example no. 1

New Concepts 1. The ages of 8 grade 7 students are 14, 14, 11,
and Practicing 12, 15, 11, 13, 12. What is the range of their ages?
New Skills#1
Solution: R = H – L
R = 15 – 11
R=4
2. Given the grades of 3 achievers in the class,
determine who is the most consistent. They have
the same average grade of 96.

Using the range is not enough to identify who is

the most consistent among the students, but the
Republic of the Philippines
Department of Education

SCHOOLS DIVISION OFFICE OF ABRA
DUGONG NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN MATHEMATICS 9
choices are cut down into two, Student B and
Student C because their grades have the lowest
range. Now let us use mean deviation to
determine who is more consistent between these
two students.

F. Discussing Solution: For Student B, we solve for MD step by

New Concepts step. Step 1: Calculate the mean. It is already
and Practicing mentioned that the average or mean of the grades
New Skills#2 of the 3 students is 96. Let us show using the
formula. Add all the grades then divide the sum
by the number of subjects.
̅ =∑ 𝑿= 95+97+95+98+96+95+95+97 8 = 𝑥̅ = 96
𝑿
𝑵 𝟖

We now compare the Mean Deviation of the grades

of the two students. Since, Student C has the lower
MD, Student C is more consistent than Student B.
A Low mean deviation indicates that the data
points tend to be close to the mean. Therefore,
Student C is the most consistent achiever.

Example 2:

1. Find the mean deviation of the following

Step 2. Find the absolute difference between

each score from the mean.

|𝑥 − 𝑥̅ | = |12 − 14 | = 2

= |17 − 14 | = 3

= |13 − 14| = 1

= |17 − 14 | = 3

= |11 − 14 | = 3

Step 3. Find the sum of the differences and

divide it by N.

∑ |𝑥 − 𝑥̅ | = |12 − 14 | = 2

= |17 − 14| = 3

= |13 − 14| = 1

know your position or rank on class for example to
determine your achievements.

Do you agree with me? Yes ma’am.

What is the importance of being on top

Being on top of the class means a

the bottom means shame, but in a
positive way, you should strive
harder inorder to be on the top.
Very brilliant answers! And for that, let’s
