OBJECTIVE
0-9 COUNTER USING IC 4026 & LEDS –
The project titled "0-9 Digital Counter Using IC 4026 and LEDs" focuses on designing a digital
counter circuit capable of counting from 0 to 9 and displaying the count on a seven-segment
display. This project utilizes the versatile IC 4026 along with various components such as
switches, resistors, capacitors, LEDs, and a PCB. The objective is to create a functional and
educational digital counting solution that can be applied in various electronic projects.

APPARATUS REQUIRED
 IC 4026 (1)
 Switch (1)
 Push Button (2)
 1kΩ resistors (2)
 220Ω resistor (7)
 22μF electrolytic capacitor (1)
 Red LEDs (21)
 9V Battery
 PCB
 Wires

THEORY
The IC 4026 is a CMOS integrated circuit that acts as a 7-segment counter
and display driver. It can count in decimal digits (0 to 9) and drive a 7-
segment display. In this project, it serves as the core component for the
digital counting operation. The 22μF electrolytic capacitor is used for
debouncing the switch, stabilizing the input signal. Resistors are
employed to limit current flow, ensuring the LEDs and IC operate within
their specified ranges.

2
IC 4026:

The IC 4026 is a CMOS integrated circuit with the capability to function

as a 7-segment counter and display driver. It can count in decimal digits
from 0 to 9 and drive a seven-segment display. The IC 4026 integrates a
counter, decoder, and a 7-segment display driver within a single
package, making it a valuable component for digital counting and
display applications.

Capacitor (22μF):

A capacitor is an electronic component designed to store and discharge

electrical energy. In this project, a 22μF electrolytic capacitor is used to
debounce the switch. It filters out noise and stabilizes the input signal,
ensuring the circuit operates smoothly and reliably.

Resistors (1kΩ and 220Ω):

Resistors are passive electronic components used to limit the flow of

electric current in a circuit. The 1kΩ resistors are employed to limit the
current passing through the LEDs, preventing them from burning out.
The 220Ω resistors are used to limit current when connecting the LEDs
to the output pins of IC 4026.

3
Red LEDs:

Red Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are semiconductor devices that emit
light when current flows through them. In this project, 21 red LEDs
serve as numerical display elements. They light up sequentially to
represent the digits 0 to 9.

PROCEDURE

Step 1: Component Collection

Gather all the necessary components as listed in the project description, ensuring
they are in working order.

Step 2: Circuit Design

Design the circuit layout on the PCB, placing the IC 4026, switches, push buttons,
resistors, capacitors, and LEDs according to the schematic diagram of the 0-9
Digital Counter circuit.

Step 3: Component Connections

Connect the components as follows:

IC 4026:

Connect Pin 16 (VCC) of IC 4026 to the positive terminal of the 9V battery.

4
Connect Pin 8 (GND) of IC 4026 to the negative terminal of the battery.

Connect Pin 14 (CLOCK INHIBIT) of IC 4026 to ground to enable counting.

Connect Pins 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 of IC 4026 to the corresponding segments of the

seven-segment display.

Switches and Push Buttons:

Connect one side of the switches and push buttons to the positive terminal of the
battery.

Connect the other side of the switches to the inputs of IC 4026 for manual counting
control.

Connect one terminal of the push buttons to the ground and the other terminal to
the RESET (Pin 15) of IC 4026 for resetting the counter.

Resistors:

Connect 1kΩ resistors in series with the LEDs for current limiting.

Connect 220Ω resistors in series with the LEDs when connecting them to the
output pins of IC 4026.

Capacitor:

Connect the positive leg of the 22μF electrolytic capacitor to the VCC line and the
negative leg to the GND line for power supply stabilization.

Step 4: Circuit Testing

5
Before enclosing the circuit in a PCB case, test the connections and functionalities.
Verify that the counter counts accurately when switches or push buttons are
pressed and that the LEDs display the correct numbers corresponding to the count.

Step 5: Finalize Connections

Once the circuit is confirmed to be functioning correctly, double-check all the

connections to ensure there are no loose connections, and all components are
properly soldered onto the PCB.

Step 6: Power Up

Connect the 9V battery to the circuit and power it up. Observe the seven-segment
display as you press the switches or push buttons. The display should count from 0
to 9 and reset to 0 when the reset button is pressed.

Step 7: Enclosure (Optional)

If desired, enclose the circuit in a suitable case to protect it from external elements
and enhance its presentation.

Step 8: Project Testing

Test the complete project again after enclosing it to ensure that all components are
working correctly, even in the enclosed environment.
