WEEK 7: LESSON 1
PROBLEMS INVOLVING EXPONENTIAL FUNCTION
OBJECTIVES:
Example 1:
Suppose a culture of 300 bacteria at ARL Farm is put into a petri dish
and the culture doubles every 10 hours.
Conditions:
300 bacteria at ARL Farm
doubles (2) every 10 hours
Solution:
y0 = 300 bacteria
rate of growth = 2 (doubles)
T = every 10 hours
t = 90 hours
1
Example 2:
Conditions:
decays half (½) of itself every 5 days
Initially, there are 50 grams
Solutions:
y0 = 50 grams
rate of decay = ½ (decays half of itself)
T = every 5 days
t = 30 days
y = 50 (½) 30/5
y = 50 (½) 6
y = 0.781
Example 3:
Conditions:
deposits P10, 000.00 in a bank that pays 3% compound interest annually
Solution:
Principal amount = P10 000.00
interest = 3% or 0.03
time = 11 years
A = P (1 + r ) t.
2
A = 10,000 (1 + 0.03) 11
A = 10,000 (1.03) 11
A = 13,842.34
Example 4:
The predicted population of a certain city is given by P = 200 000e (0.03y) where
y is the number of years after the year 2020. Predict the population for the
year 2030.
Conditions:
population of a certain city is given by P = 200 000e (0.03y) where y is the
number of years after the year 2020
Solution:
P = 200 000e (0.03y)
Time = 10years (20230-2020)

Directions: Answer the activity below and apply the concepts of exponential
function. Write your answer on a sheet of paper.
Procedure:
Using the exponential models below, solve the following worded problems and
show your complete solutions.
2. Suppose the bacteria doubles every 15 hours. What is the initial number of
bacteria if the number of bacteria after 75 hours is 6,496 grams?
