Minutes from the Meeting of Digbeth Residents Association (DRA) and Neighbourhood Watch on Monday 5th March 2012

at 6pm in the Nomad room, ground floor ZELLIG, Custard Factory. 1. Roll Call and Apologies Present: Joe Holyoak, Andy Wood, Sandra Hall, Val Woodward, Pamela Pinski Apologies: John Gordon, Julie Brown Matters Arising 2a. St Patricks Parade DRA has been registered as a walking group for the St Patricks Parade; email will be sent to all members to encourage them to participate, and this will also be promoted via the website. 2b. Island House Joe Holyoak reported that Island House has been demolished. Lessons learned for the future include the need for a volunteer to keep abreast of planning applications in Digbeth, to keep DRA informed of any arising issues and to contact Birmingham City Council or our local MP on our behalf. 2c. Digbeth Summit It is hoped that documents reporting the outcomes of the Digbeth Summit will be prepared ready for the DRA meeting in May. 2d. Fundraising Strategy With the fundraising received from Reclaim our Streets, West Midlands Police and Community Chest, the need for DRA to have a strategy/budget on how to spend such monies is becoming more urgent. 3. Planning Report DRA Planning Liaison Julie Brown sent a report to the meeting. This will be circulated with the minutes. The Connaught Square site is to be sold; Sandra Hall offered to appeal to the new/current owners to clear the site so that it could be (albeit temporarily) used as a public park. DRA would seek the support of other organisations, including Edible Eastside, Project Pigeon and Birmingham Friends of the Earth in this appeal. Action Sandra Hall 4. Discussion of the roles of Committee Members Val Woodward was hoping to have a discussion of the roles of committee members, but due to the low turnout, this will be postponed until the next committee meeting.

5. Police Report and Neighbourhood Watch News Sgt Andy Wood presented a report at the meeting. The main points were that vehicle crime had been low over the previous month; although nightclubs in the area had seen an increase in crime (theft of mobile phones/purses etc), this does not affect residents. The St Patricks Parade on 11th March may cause some issues, even though the organisers have decided to minimise disruption by opening closed roads sooner. The 17th March will also be a busy day for Digbeth, with St Patricks Day, Birmingham City Football Club playing at home, and England playing Ireland in the rugby. Any Other Business 6a. Upcoming Festivals in Digbeth i. Sandra Hall informed the meeting that 21 Brazilian artists will be working in Digbeth as part of the Espirito Brum Festival in September. ii. Flatpack and Fierce Festivals will be returning to Digbeth soon. iii. Still Walking Festival will be holding a number of organised walks around Digbeth from 15th March. 6b. MADE Eastside Masterplan Public Exhibition Details of the above event will be circulated to all DRA members and posted online in the hope that someone is able to represent Digbeth Residents on the 12th March. 7. Date and Time of Next Meetings The next committee meeting will be held on Monday 14th May 2012 at 6pm in the NOMAD room, ground floor ZELLIG, Custard Factory. The next open meeting will be held on Monday 2nd April 2012 at 6pm in the NOMAD room, ground floor ZELLIG, Custard Factory. The discussion at this meeting will be on the topic of Community Power.
