INTRODUCTION
Etymology A BLEND OF GASOLINE AND ALCOHOL
An alternative fuel consisting of a blend of ethyl alcohol and unleaded gasoline, especially a blend of 10 percent ethanol and 90 percent gasoline. Ethanol fuel mixtures have "E" numbers which describe the percentage of ethanol in the mixture by volume, for example, E85 is 85% anhydrous ethanol and 15% gasoline. Low ethanol blends, from E5 to E25, are also known as gasohol, though internationally the most common use of the term gasohol refers to the E10 blend.
FACTS..
Gasohol can be used in most modern and light duty vehicles with an internal combustion. Gasohol is useful in decreasing the populations dependence on foreign oil, and reduces the carbon monoxide emissions by up to 30 percent.
The ethanol typically used in the Gasohol production is derived from fermenting agricultural crops.
Petrol vs Gasohol
The move, which stems both from environment and economic concerns, is expected to reduce emissions of polluting gases such as carbon monoxide from vehicles by up to 10 per cent. Gasohol is slightly cheaper by one rupee (US$0.02) than normal petrol, and vehicles do not need to be adapted to run on the fuel. It will also help curb Indias huge import bills on crude oil. India spends US$16 billion per year to import 78 million tonnes of crude oil --70 per cent of its needs. And it will give a boost to farmers that produce sugarcane, which is fermented to make ethanol.
IN INDIA
India has made the use of 'gasohol' petrol mixed with five per cent ethanol compulsory in nine of its states.
The public sector Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) is planning to launch a blended fuel with higher 10 per cent alcohol content . Gasohol marks the second major green fuel to be adopted by India. In an attempt to curb Delhis worsening air pollution, the Delhi state government last year banned the use of diesel in buses and replaced it with GASOHOL. The move has reduced air pollution levels in the Indian capital, which was ranked five years ago as the worlds fourth most polluted city.
ADVANTAGES
In a search for alternative fuel options the usage of Gasohol has certain advantages: Emissions from using Gasohol are less than that of vehicles using gasoline. Emissions are not only harmful to the environment but can cause serious problems and even death in humans. By minimizing the emissions expelled into the atmosphere, we not only ensure a greener environment, but also a physically healthier population eliminating illness. Such as, asthma and heart disease, caused by vehicle emissions. Using Gasohol assists in the reduction of oil imported from other countries. Not only does this lessen our carbon footprint but, with Gasohol production of up to 85 percent ethanol, less oil needs to be imported to manufacture gasoline.
CONTD.
Crop prices are raised with the production of Gasohol. Ethanol is an alcohol derived from crops such as cane, grains and sorghum. This increases the demand and ultimately the price of these crops. Gasohol is typically cheaper than petroleum as it is cheaper to manufacture. The Gasohol blend of 90 percent gasoline and 10 percent anhydrous ethanol has been approved for use in several countries and can be used with no modification to the vehicles engine.
LIMITATIONS
The use of ethanol blends in conventional gasoline vehicles is restricted to low mixtures, as ethanol is corrosive and can degrade some of the materials in the engine and fuel system Also the engine has to be adjusted for a higher compression ratio as compared to a pure gasoline engine, in order to take advantage of ethanols higher oxygen content, thus allowing an improvement in fuel efficiency and a reduction of tailpipe emissions. The required modifications to gasoline engines to run smoothly and without degrading any materials can be seen from the following table.
FUTURE
With most of the worlds automobiles running on Gasohol, it is only a matter of time before vehicles capable of running on pure ethanol will be designed. Although not the perfect solution, Gasohol is a step in the right direction to finding alternative fuels for our automobiles. The positive aspects of Gasohol outweigh the negatives and, with more countries making Gasohol available at their gas stations, everybody is making an effort in ensuring less dangerous gasses are expelled into the atmosphere. Indias switch to gasohol comes some three decades after the idea was first mooted in the 1970s. But the petrol-ethanol blend is only a small step forward; diesel accounts for almost four-fifths of Indian vehicles.
