Background

Throughout American history, the ruling


majority often takes action to prevent certain
minorities from exercising political power,
usually with the aim of maintaining the
hegemony of the majority. But, behind the
action there is a hidden motivation.

Biography about the Author
• Flannery O’Connor was born on March 25, 1925, in
Savannah, Georgia. She studied writing at the Unive
rsity of lowa
O’Connor’s story takes places in Dilton, is a town in t
he deep South. This story focuses on why a college pr
ofessor named Rayber decides to change barbers. Ra
yber, being an educated man, believes in racial equali
ty and supports a progressive political candidate by t
he name of Darmon. Rayber’s barber supports a cand
idate named Hawkson who never changes his speech
es that appeal to the prejudices of lower class black.
Anaylisis
"You a nigger lover?" The barber asked
From the quote above, showed that if the Rayber as the
voters can be a nigger lover based on who would he
choose in the election. But that is only the barber
perseption, his negative prejudice can be racist and it
made Rayber fed up with the brutal question. Not only
prejudice, from the question above also can be found a
stereotype issue. Where, a voters who choose Darmon is
nigger lover because Darmon is colored.
In the last speech “we get rid of them Mother Hubba
rds and get us a man can put these niggers in their pl
aces. Shuh.” It means that the Nigger voters didn’t ha
ve a right to vote in the campaign, on the contrary he
challenged the white voters to rid the Niggers in anot
her place with their groups. They didn’t allow to live
contiguous with the white skin.

Conclusion
• Based on the analysis of this short story can be con
cluded that stereotype and prejudice occur because
of differences of opinion related to the election of l
eaders. prejudice occurs because of the views of ot
hers who claim someone negatively. And stereotyp
e is the view of others who think that someone is ju
dged based on views attached to a particular group
or rac
