• Air Inlet and Exhaust System:

MTL LEARNING CENTER

– comprises the Turbocharger, valve mechanism, intake and

exhaust valves and manifold
– some engine utilized the waste gate to boost the
turbocharger effectiveness over lower engine speeds
– the waste gate is controlled by boost pressure and opening
pressure is around 24 +0.5 psi
The boost pressure controls the maximum rpm of the
turbocharger, because the boost pressure controls
the position of the waste gate.
MTL LEARNING CENTER

The waste gate controls the amount of exhaust gas that

is allowed to bypass the turbine side of the
turbocharger. This valve then controls the rpm of the
turbocharger.
When the engine operates in conditions of low boost
(lug), a spring presses against a diaphragm in the
canister.
The actuating rod will move and the waste gate will
close.
Then, the turbocharger can operate at maximum
performance.
When the boost pressure increases against the diaphragm
in the canister, the waste gate will open.
MTL LEARNING CENTER

The rpm of the turbocharger becomes limited.

The rpm limitation occurs because a portion of the
exhaust gases bypass the turbine wheel of the
turbocharger.
The following levels of boost pressure indicate a
problem with the waste gate:
Too high at full load conditions
Too low at all lug conditions
Note: The housing assembly for the wastegate is preset
at the factory and no adjustments can be made.
The following factors also affect the maximum rpm of
MTL LEARNING CENTER

the turbocharger:
 The engine rating
The horsepower demand on the engine
 The high idle rpm
The height above sea level for engine operation
 Inlet air restriction
 Exhaust system restriction

• Rated Fuel Pos:
MTL LEARNING CENTER

– It is the limit based on the horsepower rating

of the engine
– It is programmed by factory into the
Personality module and cannot be
programmed in the field
– similar to rack stop and torque spring on
mechanically governed engine
– provides a typical horsepower and torque
curves for a specific engine family and
rating

and mechanically actuated

• Electronic control areas are :
– ECM, PM, sensors, unit injectors, harness and
connectors
• Mechanically actuation involves :
– camshaft, lifter, push-rod, rocker arm assembly
and adjusting nut

• Fuel injector operation:
MTL LEARNING CENTER

• Injector plunger movement downward by the rocker assembly

cuts off the supply of fuel into the injector.
• Energizing the injector solenoid closes the return port and
allows fuel pressure within the injector to build up
• Fuel begins injection when pressure of fuel reaches 5000 psi
and cease injection when fuel pressure falls to 3500 psi
• Length of fuel injection is dependent on the governor logic
programmed into the ECM

• Fuel injection
MTL LEARNING CENTER

– only when ECM sends 105 volt signal to

energize solenoid to close the return passage
– amount of fuel injected depends on the
duration the ECM energizes the solenoid
– FRC Fuel Pos limits the amount of fuel that
can be injected
– FRC Fuel Pos is determined by the boost air
pressure

• Lubrication System:
MTL LEARNING CENTER

– Filtered oil at 110 deg C is supplied to the engine

at about 40 psi during rated engine operating
condition
– High pressure relief valve is set at 100 psi
– T/C bearings are lubricated by oil taken direct
from the main oil galley and return by gravity back
to the sump
