Research Ethics

– According to the City University of Hong Kong


(2019), Research Ethics provides guidelines for
the responsible conduct of research.
– The following is a summary of ethical principles:
Ethical Principles
1. Honesty

Honestly report data, results, methods and


procedures.
Do not fabricate, falsify, or misrepresent data.

Avoid bias in experimental design, data


analysis, data interpretation, and other
aspects of research.

3. Integrity

Keep your promises and agreements; act with


sincerity; strive for consistency of thought and
action.

4. Carefulness

Avoid careless errors and negligence; carefully and


critically examine your own work and the work of
your peers.
Keep good records of research activities.

5. Openness

Share data, results, ideas, tools, resources.


Be open to criticism and new ideas.

6. Respect for Intellectual Property

Honor patents, copyrights, and other forms of


intellectual property.
Do not use unpublished data, methods, or results
without permission.
Give credit where credit is due.
Never plagiarize.

7. Confidentiality

Protect the identity of your research participants.

8. Non-Discrimination

Avoid discrimination on the basis of sex, race,


ethnicity, or other factors that are not related to
their scientific competence and integrity.

9. Legality

Know and obey relevant laws, institutional and


governmental policies.
Research Ethics in the Department of
Education
– According to (D.O. No. 16 s. 2017, page 16), Ethical Principles include
“ensuring confidentiality in handling data of respondents and
providing consent forms when necessary”.
– When interacting with learners, researchers must refer to D.O. No. 40
s. 2012 (DepEd Child Protection Policy).
– When involving (Indigenous People) IP learners, (Indigenous Cultural
Communities) ICCs, (Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Practices)
IKSPs, and (Indigenous Learning Systems) ILSs, researchers should
adhere to D.O. No. 62 s. 2011 (National IPEd Policy Framework).
