INTRODUCTION
 In India annually 15 million waste tyres are
generated which are non biodegradable in
nature.
 Crumb rubbers are used in bitumen
modification it is called as rubberized
bitumen.
 By using these rubbers in pavement
construction it reduces land filling problems
and reduce pollution.
WHY RUBBERIZED BITUMEN

 Reduces the concern of maintaining waste

tyres
 It improves the quality of bitumen
 Reduces maintenance cost
 Can be used in construction of all weather

roads
 Reduces the use of aggregates up to

certain quantity
 Eco friendly
METHEDOLOGY

It undergoes four basic stages

1. Segregation stage
2. cleaning stage
3. Shredding stage
4. Blending stage
 Segregation
 This is the process of identifying the
different sources of waste rubbers and
collection. Usually automobile tyres have
more synthetic rubber than truck tyres.
 Cleaning
 It is done in two steps, initially the
collected waste tyres are cut into pieces
of 1cm flukes. Then they are washed by
waste water from near by source in a
specifically designed washing unit.
 Then in next step the flukes are again
washed by fresh batch of water and then
they are dried and packed in the big bags
and transported to be reused in production
process.
 Shredding
 In this process the flukes are being cut into
little sizes between 2.6mm to 4.75mm with
scrap grinder.
 Most commonly practiced methods to bring

tyres to smaller sizes are:

 Cracker mill
 Cryogenic process
Blending(Preparation of rubber blend)

 This can be carried using two methods

 Dry process
 Wet process
 In dry process crumb rubbers are used

as a portion of aggregates before

mixing with the bitumen. They may also
sprinkled in between the aggregates
before laying the asphalt bitumen layer.
 WET PROCESS
 In wet process crumb rubbers are added to

the hot bitumen at a temperature of around

150-160*C and the mixture is agitated
mechanically until there is a reaction
between bitumen and crumb rubbers . The
rubber particles swells as they absorb oils
from the bitumen into the polymer chain.
 This process is to be carried out for around

50min in mechanical stirrer by maintaining

150-160*C temperature. After contents are
properly stirred the modified bitumen is
cooled at a room temperature and suitably
stored.
COMPARISONS
 Rubberized bitumen have slightly
better elasticity then conventional
bitumen
 It imparts better age resistance property
 It is resistance to stripping
 Higher softening point
 Low maintenance cost
NEED FOR RUBBEISED BITUMEN

 Increasing aggressive traffic

conditions
 Varying climatic conditions
 To meet the demand
 To reduce maintenance cost
 To achieve resistance to cracking

and creep failure

ADVANTAGES
 The surface texture give the pavement
improved skid resistance during all seasons
 It reduces noise up to 10dBs
 Increases drainage properties of pavement
 Provides more stability to pavements
 Better age resistance property
 Improved elastic modulus increases load

carrying capacity
 Improved resistance to stripping due to

water repellent property

DISADVANTAGES
 Preparation process of rubberized
bitumen is difficult as it is to be heated
at high temperature continuously for
about 50 to 60min.
 Rubberized bitumen is sticky when

applied so it takes more time to allow

traffic over it.
 Consume more energy during blending
RESULTS
1.The values of Marshal stability are consistent for
all percentage rubber reading
2.The values of flow value are consistent for all
rubber percentage reading.
3.The values of air voids in total mix are
consistent up to 15% of addition of rubber.
4.AThe values of voids filled with bitumen are
consistent up to 10 % of addition of rubber.
