Research
• Research is defined as careful consideration of study regarding a
particular concern or problem using scientific methods.
• According to the American sociologist Earl Robert Babbie, “research is
a systematic inquiry to describe, explain, predict, and control the
observed phenomenon. It involves inductive and deductive methods.”
• Inductive research methods analyse an observed event, while
deductive methods verify the observed event.
• Inductive approaches are associated with qualitative research, and
deductive methods are more commonly associated with quantitative
analysis.
Types of research methods
• Research methods are broadly classified as Qualitative and Quantitative.
Both methods have distinctive properties and data collection methods.
• Qualitative methods: Qualitative research is a method that collects data
using conversational methods, usually open-ended questions. The
responses collected are essentially non-numerical. This method helps a
researcher understand what participants think and why they think in a
particular way.
• Quantitative methods: Quantitative methods deal with numbers and
measurable forms. It uses a systematic way of investigating events or
data. It answers questions to justify relationships with measurable
variables to either explain, predict, or control a phenomenon.
Qualitative research
• Qualitative rersearch is collecting, analyzing and interpreting data by
observing what people do and say. Qualitative research refers to the
meanings,concepts, definitions, characteristics, metaphors, symbols
and descriptions of things.
• It is subjective and uses very different methods of collecting
information, including individual, in-depth interviews and focus
groups. The nature of this type of research is explaratory and open-
ended.
Qualitative research
Strengths
• Good for examining feelings and motivations allows for complexity and
depth of issues.
• Provides insights into the real life situations.
Weaknesses
Cannot extrapolate to the whole population
Volume of data
Complexity of analysis
Time consuming nature of the clerical efforts required in this method of
research.
Document / Data analysis
• Document analysis is a valuable research method that has been used for
many years. This method consists of analysing various types of documents
including books, newspaper articles, academic journal articles, and
institutional reports.
• Any document containing text is a potential source for qualitative analysis.
Document is a term used to refer to a wide variety of material including
visual sources, such as photographs, video, and film. Like documents
consisting of texts, those that consist of visual material can be a source for
qualitative analysis.
• Analysing documents has frequently been an underused approach to
qualitative research. Qualitative researchers often favour using other
methods, such as interviews, over analysing documents because of their
desire to participate more actively in field research.
Importance
• Detailed and descriptive analysis
• Uncovers unexpected findings
• Captures perspectives and experiences
• Allows for the development of hypotheses
• Can complement quantitative data
Research Methodology
•Authenticity
The documents which are selected should be authentic and reliable.
•Representativeness
The documents are select should be representative of the population which is being studied.
Important Considerations for Document Selection
Cont.
• Credibility
The documents which are selected should be credible and believable.
• Accuracy
The documents which are selected should be accurate and truthful.
• Accessibility
Always have in mind who may use the information and can it be
harmful for the participants

Important feautures
• Data Import is simple and possible for different sources
• Data Preprocessing Tools are provided
• Data Visualization to understand the data better by highlighting certain trends or show the results
in different ways
• Machine Lerning Tool to use advanced models for classification, clustering or predictions of the
data
• Data Security by offering encryption options for private or personal data
• Intergration of other tools, programs or algorithms
• Good connection within the software for real-time collaboration with colleagues
