INTRODUCTION

• Concrete is good in compression but weak in tension.

• Types of fibres used in FRC: Basalt Fibres,Steel fibres, glass fibres,

polypropylene fibres, natural fibres like coir, sugarcane, banana, etc.

• Necessity of adding fibres in concrete:

1. To increase tensile strength

2. To control crack width and increase durability

3. To improve impact strength of concrete

4. To minimize steel reinforcement requirement

3
• Type of fibre which is proposed to use in the dissertation work:

4
PROBLEM STATEMENT

In the present dissertation work, it is proposed to check the flexural performance of

High strength fibre reinforced concrete using basalt fibre at elevated temperature for
different duration of time for three temperatures.

5
OBJECTIVES

1. To design the mix of M65 grade high strength fibre reinforced concrete using
basalt fibre.
2. To study the flexural performance of high strength fibre reinforced concrete
exposure to elevated temperature (800º, 900º & 1000º C) with varying exposure
time.
3. To study microstructural analysis results of high strength basalt fibre reinforced
concrete after exposure to high temperature.

6
WORK DONE

• Checking the properties of materials:

• Specific gravity of fine aggregate

• Specific gravity of fly ash

• Specific gravity of cement

• Specific gravity of coarse aggregate

• Water absorption of coarse aggregate

• Mix design of self compacting concrete of M65 grade

MIX DESIGN

• Grade of concrete : M65

• Type of cement : OPC
• Nominal maximum size of aggregate : 20mm
• Exposure condition : Severe :
• Type of aggregate : Crushed angular aggregate
• Mineral admixture : Fly ash
• Specific gravity of
• Cement : 2.90
• Fly ash : 2.13
• Silica Fume : 2.20
• Coarse aggregate : 2.94
• Fine aggregate : 2.93
• Chemical admixture : 1.08
• Water absorption of coarse aggregate : 1%
11
MIX DESIGN Contd...

Step 1: Target strength:

f’ck = (fck + 1.65S, fck + X)max
= [(65 + 1.65 X 6), (65+8)]max
= (74.9, 73)max
f’ck = 74.9 = 75.0 N/mm2
Step 2: Approximate air content:
For 20mm coarse aggregate, approximate air content = 0.5% of volume of concrete
Step 3: Water cement ratio:
For PPC cement and 75 N/mm2 target strength,
Water cement ratio = 0.26 (< 0.45 for severe exposure condition)
Hence OK
Step 4: Water content = 186 kg/m3
186+8.4/100 x186
=201.624=202 kg/m3
12
MIX DESIGN Contd...
Reduce by 30% as superplasticizer used
202 X 0.70
=141.4=141kg/m3

Step 5: Cementitious material content = = = 486.2 ≈ 486 kg/m 3

Step 6: Cementitious material content 486 X 1.10
=534.6 ≈ 535 kg/m3
Fly ash = 15% of cementitious material
Thus, Fly ash content = 535 X 0.15 =80.25 kg/m 3
Silica fume content= 5% of cementitious material
Thus, Silica Fume content = 535 X 0.05 =26.75 kg/m 3
OPC content = Cementitious material content – Fly ash content+ Silica fume
= 535 -80.25-26.75
= 428 kg/m3
Revised w/c ratio =0.264

MIX DESIGN Contd...
Step 7:
a)Total volume =1m³

b)Volume of entrapped air=0.005 m³

c)Volume of cement=0.147m³

d)Volume of water=0.141m³

e)Volume of silica fume=0.0122m³

f)Volume of fly ash=0.037m³

g)Volume of chemical admixture=0.0024m³

h)Volume of all in aggregate=[(a-b)-(c+d+e+f+g)]

=[(1-0.005)-(0.147+0.141+0.0122+0.037+0.0024)]

=0.655m³

i)Mass of coarse aggregate=h x volume of CA x specific gravity of CA x 1000

= 0.655x0.667x2.94x1000

= 1284.9kg 1285 kg

j)Mass of fine aggregate=h x volume of CA x specific gravity of CA x 1000

= 0.655x0.333x2.93x1000
14
= 639kg
MIX DESIGN Contd...

Step 8: Mix proportion:

Cement content = 428kg/m3
Fly ash = 80.26 kg/m3
Silica Fume =26.75 kg/m3
Water = 186 kg/m3
Fine aggregate = 639 kg/m3
Coarse aggregate = 1285 kg/m3
Chemical admixture = 2.67 kg/m3
Free water cement ratio = 0.26
